Laurentians clinch 2nd place.

St. Lawrence blanks Feilians 1-0

St. Lawrence Laurentians come up with a big 1-0 victory over Feildians in Provincial Molson Challenge Cup soccer played at KGV. The victory secures St. Lawrence 2nd place in the overall standings with one game remaining. Holy Cross had earlier clinched the 1st place Bobby Breen  Memorial Trophy for the fifth consecutive year. Rookie St. Lawrence Laurentian coach ,Blair Aylward was very pleased with the victory. He said, "the victory over the Feildians finally came. " It was the Laurentians first victory over the Feildians this season. Feildians stunned St. Lawrence last season by defeating the Laurentians in a semi -final match played in Mount Pearl.St. Lawrence Laurentians striker Stefan Slaney scored the lone goal of the match at the 39 minute mark. The goal was Stefan's 13 goal of the season. Both clubs played rather conservative throughout the match knowing that if a red card was issued it could spell disaster for the player and his team on Labor Day.  In the second half, the Feildians somewhat pressed and carried the play, especially in the later stages. But again and and again it was the strong defensive effort of the Laurentians back-line,  led by center back Clinton Edwards  and the Laurentian goalkeeper Patrick Slaney, that allowed St. Lawrence to perserve a 1-0 shutout victory.

Shut-out : Patrick Slaney

Laurentians Goalscorer: Stefan Slaney
