Breen and Harris Named All-Canadians

(LANGLEY, BC) – Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS) announced its major award winners for the 2008 women’s soccer season Wednesday evening. Memorial was well represented as two Sea~Hawks were named All-Canadians. Laura Breen was named a first team All-Canadian while teammate Malorie Harris was named to the second team.

Laura Breen, a fourth year striker from St. John’s, was named a first team All-Canadian. Breen is a two-time second team All-Canadian in 2005 and 2006. This season Breen led the AUS in scoring with nine goals in 13 games. For her efforts she was named the 2008 AUS Most Valuable Player. Breen’s outstanding dribbling and shooting skills have helped her score an impressive 33 goals for the Sea-Hawks since 2004. According to head coach Walt Mavin, "Laura is outstanding and a treat to coach. She is a very skilled and dynamic player who always demands the attention of opposing defenders. She possesses fantastic finishing abilities and an outstanding level of commitment to the game and her team."

Malorie Harris, a fourth year forward from Mount Pearl, was recognized as a second team All-Canadian. This is the second time Harris was named to the second team, having been recognized in the 2007 season. Harris is a talented offensive player who has scored 23 goals in her four years with Memorial. She is a talented multisport athlete who will now focus on working hard to solidify a role on the women’s volleyball team. Women’s soccer head coach Walt Mavin said, “Malorie has been an exciting player to watch and a real competitor on the field for us for the last number of years. She is an outstanding athlete.”

Breen and Harris are only the fourth and fifth Memorial women’s soccer players to be named All-Canadians. Christina McDonald was named to the first team in 1997. Sarah Arnott (2001) and Sandy Faulkner (1987, 1989) were named to the second team.
