Holy Cross 4 Mount Pearl 1 Game Report by Gord Dunphy
Mount Pearl gets lights for Lower Smallwood Soccer Pitch
Holy Cross, lead by 2 goal effort from Jon Lacey, defeat Mount Pearl, 4-1
In a hard fought contest played at the Lower Smallwood Soccer Pitch in Mount Pearl it was Jon Lacey who turned the lights off scoring two goals to lead Holy Cross to a 4-1 victory. It was a excellent game of soccer. A contest where not necessary was the score a full reflection of how the teams played. Actually, both teams played very well and had there moments. In the first half, Justin Pickford was the star. Not only did he score, for a 1-0 half time lead at the 21 minute mark, but he was there setting up plays and causing complete termoil for the Holy Cross backline with his speed. But in this contest it was Tyler Putt that made the difference. Putt is starting to make a name for himself around this league. He is gaining confidence and respect and is a goalie that is starting to be noticed. Mount Pearl somewhat controlled the majority of the scoring opportunities, in the first half, but couldn't finish.
The second half saw the lights officially turned on and it was Holy Cross's offence suddenly come alive with Jon Lacey leading the way. He scored two beautiful goals one at the 48 minute mark and again at the 63 minute mark. Lacey had his best showing of the season as he played with more passion and emotion than he normally does. Lacey goals were sandwiched by a rocket of a shot by Zack Atwood at the 50 minute mark as he scored a dandy. Then at the 60 minute mark, Jeremy Babstock, scored Holy Cross's fourth and final goal. For the remainder of the game it was flat out. Both teams played from end to end with both teams defense winning most of the battles. Holy Cross's Andrew Le was a standout while Sean Connolly, Brian Reddy and Karl Reddy put in strong performances. For Mount Pearl it was Peckford, Shane Antle, Marc Reddy and Bernie Manning with fine performances.
