Kirby Wins 8th Straight Provincial Title

                           CBS Kirby United : 2015 Breen's Jubilee Champions

Kirby United Repeat as Breen’s Jubilee Trophy Champs

CBS Kirby United successfull defended their senior women’s title Saturday afternoon in front of an estimated 1000 fans at Topsail Field in Conception Bay South. The defending champs downed rivals Holy Cross 4-1.  Kristina Weatherbee of CBS Kirby United received the Sherry Morrissey Award as Playoff MVP, while Alyssa Armstrong of Holy Cross took the Ann Woodford Award as Most Spirited Player of the playoffs.  CBS Kirby United will represent the province at club nationals in Calgary over the Thanksgiving Day weekend.

Prior to the game, the NLSA named the senior women’s All-Star team and individual award winners.

Remembering Betty Pickett

Remember One Of The Best - Betty Pickett

Betty Pickett was born and raised in St. Lawrence but when she moved to Marystown and married Kevin Pickett she became the heart and soul of Marystown soccer. She was at the field in good times and she was there in bad times. I remember her collecting on the gate no matter the weather. She patrolled around the field and covered more ground than most officials.
I remember being extremely hurt when we lost to Marystown in 2004 on the Laurentians 100th Anniversary and at that time I was President of the St. Lawrence Soccer Association. But when the hurting stopped I felt good for the Marystown die hard fans and it's players who had won their 1st Challenge Cup Championship. Betty Pickett was one of those people I felt happy for. She along with others deserved the taste of victory : Good for them !
Betty loved her family and enjoyed watching her boys play the game. Above all she stood her grounds but inside she was a "Gentle Woman" who loved life and the beautiful game of soccer.
 We will all miss her and we all loved her.

I was elated to hear that Constable RCMP Officer Trudy Pike who is formally of St. Lawrence, She is  now residing in the Yukon and has taken a keen interest in the sport of soccer in her new residence. 

Trudy was and still is a good friend of my daughter Melissa. Both of them started kindergarden and completed grade 12 the same year. Trudy is now a coach with Team Yukon Under -14 Girls who will be traveling to Newfoundland to participate in the National U-14 Club Tournament in October on Thanksgiving Day Weekend. Good luck Trudy to you and your team and above all enjoy the experience.  

I would like to thank all my well wishers during my surgery.

Holy Cross moves into first place

Holy Cross will be very pleased with the weekend results in St. Lawrence. When all is said and done they got a win and a tie which amounted to 4 out of a possible 6 points. They have taken over 1st place in the league. While the general feeling in St. Lawrence amongst the Laurentian fans is the real proof will come on Labor Day Weekend when it's all or nothing. But for now Holy Cross are feeling good with  a 2W - 0L -1T record against the Laurentians. Both squads  will face each other one more time in regular season play this season at KGV.

Over the years both the Laurentians and Holy Cross have have claimed decades of supremacy   In the 70's, it was the Laurentians's, in the 80's it was Holy Cross, in the 90's it was St. Lawrence. From 2000 -2009 it remained the Laurentians. Since 2010 - 2014 , Holy Cross have won five out of six championships  and they are not going to be easy to beat in 2015.

Mount Pearl shocks Holy Cross

To date, Holy Cross have been the team of the 2015 NLSA Molson Challenge Cup league. Although they were in 2nd place, they were undefeated after twelve matches and had easily beaten the 1st place St. Lawrence Laurentians in their one and only match-up of the season.

On Wednesday evening things got off rather well for Holy Cross. Steve Delong, who has been on a tear of his own in the past few weeks scoring scored six goals, scored the opening goal at the 3 minute mark and he dented the twine for Holy Cross again three minutes later. This game looked like it was going to be a blow-out for Holy Cross. Mount Pearl just didn't appear to be in the contest. However at the 15 minute mark Mount Pearl got a break and were awarded a penalty shot because of a Holy Cross foul deep inside the 18 yard  zone. Veteran Mark Reddy scored on the charity kick and this was just the break Mount Pearl needed. After the goal Mount Pearl slowly fought their way back into the contest and with their aggressive play, they eventually turned the momentum to their advantage. At the 37 minute mark Kevin Oram, who is playing some of the best soccer of his career, beat Holy Cross goalkeeper Thomas Pieroway low to the right hand corner putting Holy Cross in a little more disarray. The score was now tied at 2-2 and these two goals that were scored on Holy Cross were the only goals that Holy Cross had allowed for the month of July.

The second half  brought about a lot of aggression and personal battles that were give and take by both clubs. Yellow cards were issued by the officials and the players were issuing  many bumps and bruises and a scattered knock-down to their opponent. However it was Mount Pearl's leading goalscorer, Justin Pickford who stopped Holy Cross's dominiance and undefeated record in 2015, when he scored on a blast at the 60 minute mark that left Pieroway again for the 3rd time in this match, retrieving the ball from the back of his net. The rest of the match was rather eventful at times , it was apparent these two teams have a genuine dislike for each other. Still there was some nice plays made but as the clock was wearing thin Holy Cross just couldn't penetrate Mount Pearl's solid defensive effort. 

Mount Pearl who now are solidly in 3rd, travel out to the West Coast of the Province and take on Vince Picket's troopers in Corner Brook.  Holy Cross will engage themselves with their long time rivals in the "Soccer Capital" as they fight it out with the St.Lawrence Laurentians for the "Bobby Breen Memorial " trophy.

There is more to soccer at the KGV complex than soccer. On Wednesday evening this group of fine looking ladies showed up at the Holy Cross v Mount Pearl game. they were on their way to celebrate one of the girls who is getting married. Needless to say that was ten minutes of the game which was missed. Congratulations to the soon to be newly wed !

I would like to thank all of you who said a little prayer and sent along all your well wishes for our grandson while he was hospitalized.  He is now home recovering nicely and I thank God for that as well.
