It was the red vs blue rivalry, that demonstrated in a exhibition match played in CBS on Saturday evening, that 2013 is going to be a great season. St. Lawrence took a 2 -1 first half lead on two goals scored by newcomer, Sean Drew. Drew played last season with Mount Pearl. 

 Then in the second half, play got a little chippy as Holy Cross, wore the Laurenrians down by focusing on a running game. In the end it was former Laurentians player, Tyler Forcey denting the net twice for Holy Cross and leading the Crusaders to a very impressive 5-2 victory.

Game - well played !

Overall, I felt the game was well played. I enjoyed the physical element to the game. It added a little flare to the match. I thought the officials did a great job in calling and controlling the game.  I was impressed with both teams newcomers, they all performed well.  Sean Drew looked good and  I feel Forcey  has the potential to be a stand-out this season with Holy Cross. 

 Should be interesting !!!

The NLSA has added Allan Ross to it's list as a lifetime Honary Member. He joins a very respected group which includes - Gus Etchegary, Angus Barrett, Ben Lake,  Jeff Babstock,  George Innis and the late Newman Barrett.

Great Coach

I would have to think he was probably Newfoundland's greatest coach ever. He coached two Newfoundland teams to a National Title and he brought to this little island a different approach to the game. He taught us a technical asspect of the game that gave us a new approach. As a coach , he was a very hard customer but he got the most out of his players . He didn't take no pretty boy approach , he got his players to play hard and most of all he got respect from them for his efforts.

The impact of “Builder” Alan Ross’s departure from Britain and arrival to the shores of Newfoundland and Labrador in early 1970 to teach at Memorial University of Newfoundland, and more importantly to coach the game of soccer, is still being felt today. In 1970, Alan’s first varsity soccer team not only went undefeated, it went on to win the Atlantic Intercollegiate Athletic Association Soccer Championship and then the Canadian Intercollegiate Athletic Union National Soccer Championship in Toronto. In 1971 his team went undefeated in winning the Atlantic Intercollegiate Athletic Association Soccer Championship and in 1973 his team again won the Atlantic Intercollegiate Athletic Association Soccer Championship. In 1974 he coached the provincial U-18 team, which won the National U-18 Soccer Championship. In 1973, 1977 and 1981 Allan was head coach of the province’s Jeux Canada Games Men’s Soccer Teams. In 1972 Alan was appointed assistant coach of Canada’s National/World Cup Soccer Team and served in that position for two years. During this time Alan earned his Canadian Soccer Association National Badge Coaching Certificate, which is the highest Canadian soccer certification. His leadership and efforts in developing and advancing the game of soccer at both the provincial and national levels did not go unnoticed. He raised the coaching, refereeing and playing standard throughout the province from 1970 to 1989 and changed the culture of how the game should be played and developed.

Recognizing what he had to offer, the Newfoundland and Labrador Soccer Association quickly offered to retain him as their Technical Director. Upon accepting the offer Alan immediately began the task of educating the Newfoundland and Labrador soccer community on what was necessary for soccer players to move forward to become national contenders on a regular basis. His first task was to build a network of certified coaches throughout the province. He accomplished this task by traveling throughout the province conducting coaching and referee clinics along with countless player seminars. As well, he took a number of players, coaches, referees, and some administrators from all regions of the province under his wing to mentor. Believing in what he had to offer, these once young coaches, officials, and players have turned out to be the movers and shakers of today’s Newfoundland and Labrador soccer community. These same people are directing the coaching and player development, overseeing the acquisition of funding for programming and building modern facilities.

While the teams and the players he coached achieved success, it was the change in mind set, the philosophy and the approach to moving the game forward that Alan accomplished most. In national and provincial soccer circles today, the name of Alan Ross is frequently mentioned and he can certainly be referred to as the “Father of the Modern Game” in Newfoundland and Labrador. In 1985, at the international level, Alan was a Technical Advisor for the Newfoundland and Labrador Soccer Association’s Host Committee, which was hosting a FIFA World Cup qualifying game in St. John’s between Canada and Honduras. This was a critical game for Canada – a win would put them through to the 1986 World Cup in Mexico. Canada defeated Honduras 2 to 1 and qualified for the World Cup.

In 1989 Alan was inducted into the Newfoundland and Labrador Soccer Hall of Fame and in1990 he was inducted into the St. John’s Soccer Hall of Fame. His success was recognized nationally in 2008 when he received the Award of Merit from the Canadian Soccer Association. This award was in recognition of his outstanding contribution to the growth and development of the sport of soccer in Canada at both the provincial and national levels.

A long time St. Lawrence's Laurentiatn, die hard fan, has been chosen as the Laurentians' 2012 " Fan of the Year". Howard has stood behind the Laurentians in 'Good times and in Bad" and he swears that the Laurentians will be in the Challenge Cup finals when the Laurentians  play host to the Challenge Cup finals in 2013.

NLSA Commissioner Prepares for the 2013 Season.

Planning the Season

As NLSA Commissioner, I will be meeting with player representatives from all potential 2013 Challenge Cup  teams and the NL Canada Games team next week. I want to talk to the players and get their take on senior soccer in the province. I feel the time is now to get more  player input into what direction we want the future of  senior soccer to go in our province. Each club will be permitted to send three player reps to the meeting. The meeting is scheduled for 1 PM on Feb. 23, at the Indoor Soccer Facility in St. John's.
In March, I  will have a second Challenge Cup Meeting. This  time the meeting will involve  all Challenge Cup Teams, their coaches and their club reps.  As well, I will get their take on the future direction of soccer and the 2013 season. 
 In March, I am also hoping to travel to St. Pierre and meet with their soccer delegates and get a better relationship connected with the French Islands.
These meetings will be followed up by the NLSA Spring Planning Meeting in April. Then, hopefully we will be on the field in May.

Aylward about to be named Laurentians New Coach

In 2008, the Telegram's sports reporter John Browe wrote the following, "Blair Aylward fought back tears as he made his way off the field following the St. Lawrence Labatt Laurentians' 5-3 win over Manitoba's Hellas FC in BMO Challenge Cup soccer play Monday morning at Smallwood field in Mount Pearl.The victory gave St. Lawrence seventh place in the tournament, but it was the realization he had just played his last game with the Blueshirts that was a bit too much for the Laurentians' captain to handle."It's tough," he said. "It's not sad, but I know my body's ready to stop playing."

Aylward choked up when he talked about his family "sacrificing a lot" for him over the years.
"It's always nice to go out with a win, but I'm going to miss the camaraderie… being around the fellas more than being on the field. My body is ready to stop running," he added, managing a smile. "

 

4 Years Later Aylward About To Return

 

Sources close to the St. Lawrence Laurentians are reporting that Blair Aylward is about to be named the next head coach of the St. Lawrence Laurentians. Aylward will replace Jim Loder who coached the Laurentians for the past two seasons. Aylward  will be under the gun in St. Lawrence, as is anyone who coaches the town's beloved Laurentians. The Laurentians didn't make the Challenge Cup Provincial finals in the past two seasons and in St. Lawrence, anything but winning is "Unacceptable". Should be interesting !

 

 



 CBS Name their Challenge Cup Coach



 

CBS name a new Coach For Their Challenge Cup Squad CBS Soccer and Strikers FC are pleased to announce that Paulo David will assume the role of Head Coach for their Challenge Cup team for the upcoming 2013 season. Paulo is a native of Lisbon Portugal and started playing soccer at the age of 6 years of age in the Benfica Soccer Academy. He played with various clubs in Portugal until the age of 21 when he immigrated to Canada. Before moving to Newfoundland in 2001 he played and coached in Quebec, Nunavut and Presque Isle Maine. Upon his arrival in Newfoundland he took up residence in Conception Bay South and has been involved in the CBS Soccer Association as a Masters player, a minor coach and a member of the CBS Soccer Association Board of Directors. Paulo has a Provincial B Coaching License and a Community Senior Coaching Certificate. He is looking forward to the challenge of coaching at the Challenge Cup Level. “I know it’s a big commitment to coach at this level and I look forward to bringing my enthusiasm and love of soccer to Strikers FC. My plan is for the players to have fun on the field and play with creativity”. Paulo takes over the reins of the team immediately with weekly indoor training sessions commenced on January 6th. Strikers FC are also entered in the St. John’s Winter League which started early in January with games played weekly at the Techniplex. Other teams involved in the league are St. Lawrence, Gonzaga and the 2013 Canada Games team. Calvin Randell, President of CBS Soccer passes his congratulations to Paulo on behalf of the whole club, “I have known Paulo since his early days volunteering with CBS Soccer, he certainly brings lots of knowledge and enthusiasm, our club would like to wish Paulo and Strikers FC much success this season. CBS Soccer now has teams entered in all senior leagues with the exception of women’s Jubilee Trophy, we are presently holding regular training sessions for our Jubilee Team while looking for a head coach, for details check their website at www.cbssoccer.com. Holy Cross Names Their New Coach Former Holy Cross player, Mike Kirby will replace Jake Stanford as the teams new boss coach in 2013. Stanford will be coaching the NL ladies Canada Games Team. Kirby, will be coaching the 4 time defending champions.

# 1 - Angus Barrett Gets Inducted into CSA Hall of Fame --- 2012

Angus Barrett was inducted into the CSA Hall of Fame at a ceremony held in Ontario in May.
Angus  has been involved in soccer since the late 1950’s,  He is only the second Newfoundlander to be inducted into the CSA Hall of Fame. Gus Etchegary, originally from St. Lawrence, is the only other Newfoundlander who has been bestowed such honor.

Coach Corner's Comments : A great guy that has been involved with every aspect of the sport and still is . He has been a player, a coach, a official, a super volunteer, an NLSA President and a fan of the game. What furthermore impresses me is, a very honorable man who is he is a true gentleman and a " Super Ambassador" for the province of Newfoundland and Labrador.

The Class of 2012 Hall of Fame Inductees were a great group that all contributed greatly to the development of soccer in Newfoundland. Over the past three and sometimes four decades, all of these people could be seen  at the field in various capacities to help develop the the game.

 

Coach's Corner comments: I know each one of these inductees personally and to see  the motion they expressed and the character show at the induction ceremonies made me to very proud to be teammates of Jeff Babsock - Hall of Fame Chair and Angus Barrett on the NLSA  Hall of Fame selection committee.



# 3 - Mount Pearl Soccer Celebrates its 40th Anniversity --------2012

In 2012, Mount Pearl celebrated it`s 40th year of playing soccer. Throughout the year they celebrated this occasion and the did it in fine form . There two events that mostly caught my eye. They had a soccer match that was played for 40 hours. This was a tremendous and a great promotion for their cause. Then there was there Hall of Fame Banquet which inducted a great bunch of fellows into their Hall of Fame . I like the fact that that the HOF committee saw fit to induct their 1st Honary Life Time member , Ed Moyst.

 

Coach`s Corner comments: My hat has to goes of to the two co-chairs of the 40th Anniversary celebrations, Ed Moyst and Mike Mooney. Both of guys did an excellent job and I`m sure you presence will be found when Mount Pearl celebrates it`s 50th celebrations.  

# 4 - Holy Cross - "Now a Dynasty" ---------- 2012

Holy Cross won their 4th consecutive Provincial Challenge Cup in 2012. They are now a "Dynasty" when your talking about Challenge Cup soccer in Newfoundland. They are very dominant in all aspects of the game. They are a very skillful team and well trained. Again this season they totally dominated their opponents in the win/lose column and they haven't lost a play-off match in four years.

 

Coach's Corner Comment's : This squad is a good team but their lack of success again at the Nationals in Winnipeg in 2012 keeps this team grounded as being considered one of the better Newfoundland teams of all times. At this point, they are nowhere near  the greatness of the Holy Cross team of the 80's.

 

 



# 5 - Kirby wins 4th Jubilee Trophy ---------- 2012

The Kirby Team won it's 4th consective Provincial Jubilee Trophy Championship in 2012. This club has set a new bench mark when it comes to  women's soccer in Newfoundland. For the past four years the Kirby Team has waltzed through both the regular season and the play-offs.  

 

 

Coach's Corner Coments: Yes, this club is a stacked team but so are most contenders that represent their province at the Canadian National Club Championships. In order for this club to be better prepared for the Nationals, they will need to get themselves engaged with some better competition and realistically that may require some travel.

# 6 - St. Lawrence Masters wins Silver Medal --------- 2012

The St. Lawrence Masters put on a pretty impressive show in 2012. They went undefeated in the NL Provincial Championship in Mount Pearl and defeated  host Mount Pearl in the championship match by a very convincing 4-1 score.  This team then advanced to the finals at the Eastern Canadian Championship, which were played in St. John's and lost to a very powerful team from Quebec on PK's in the championship contest.

 

Coach's Corner comments: Certainly they have a record which is very convincing when it comes to Sr. Men's Soccer for "Team of the Year" honor. No doubt, I have to agree with most people when they say, "that this team was stacked" but the fact of the matter is, most of these players are born and breed "Laurentians."
