Holy Cross strikes back with a 4-1 victory over Mount Pearl

Steve Delong

Holy Cross : 4 vs Mount Pearl : 1

Holy Cross, led by last seasons MVP and top goalscorer Steve Delong, defeated Mount Pearl by a  a very convincing 4-1 score. The win was Holy Cross's most complete game this year. After losing to the U-18 NL Games team on Sunday, there was no doubt Cross had a lot on their mind as they entered the game and they had a lot to prove. It was Tyler Forsey who currently leads the league  in the  goalscoring department  and the  player who was recently named  Molson Challenge Cup "Player of the Month" for May, who opened the scoring at the 14 minute mark .  The remainder of the first half  was very evenly played. Mount Pearl, who is on a youth kick this season, played very well.  But the best overall scoring opportunities came at the  28 minute mark and at 40 minutes when Steve Delong was robbed and missed on a  couple of glorious scoring opportunities.
Second half - All Holy Cross
The second half was much different. Cross came out and took control early and they quickly began to dominate. It was Steve Delong who was certainly the man of the match and he orchestrated Holy Cross's attack. Not only did he lead the team by scoring two goals, the guy was all over the field. He illustrated some fine passing , shooting and individual skills of the game. His first goal came at the 55 minute mark . Mount Pearl caught a big break at the 56 minute mark when Andrew Stanford startled his own goalie when he struck the ball and put it pass his own keeper. Stanford made up for that blunder when he scored his first goal of the season by heading the ball past the Mount Pearl keeper at the 63 minute mark. Stanford's goal allowed Holy cross to regain a two goal cushion and cruise through the remainder  of the half. Delong scored his second at the 89 minute mark as he tucked a beautiful ball into the corner of the Mount Pearl net.

Big win for the Games Team & sort of a wake-up call for Holy Cross

NL Games team upset Holy Cross
As KGV has been shut down for the first quarter of the Molson Challenge Cup season  due to ongoing work being done at the facility, the Holy Cross team didn't receive much of a  welcome to their home turf. They were defeated by a group of U-18's kids that are playing in the Molson Challenge Cup league on an exhibition basis. Basically, the Games team goal , at this point,is more about player development than it is about winning.  This club is preparing themselves for the  Canada Games which is to be played in QC in mid-August. This group is well coached by head coach Mike Power and his assistant's Paul Slaney & Matt Peddle and you can bet that just showing up to the field for the Challenge Cup teams, is not enough to beat these kids. This is the Games team's second victory early in this season.
 Ask Holy Cross ?
Holy Cross, who are currently the four time defending champions, can now attest  to the old  philosophy, " you must be ready  for all games in order to win". I can guarantee you that it doesn't take much for your competitors to get up and be ready to play the competition. I witnessed that for years when I played and coached in St. Lawrence. I also knew what it was like when I coached the Lawn Shamrocks and was preparing to play teams like Holy Cross and St. Lawrence.Holy Cross, who in the month of May went undefeated, illustrated today that anything can happen when one shows up not ready. Yes, the team was without a few regulars, Andre Le & Chris Pope, but this squad is very deep in talent and must be able to handle these sorts of circumstances. There is no doubt that the team this year are going through a transition period by having a new young coach. But one must remember that in  order to be successful with a team you must have a degree of consistency with your players.
A great season
Now that the first month or quarter of the season is in the history books, I feel we are in for some good competition. I don't think the upset today is the last of what we are going to see in 2013 but I do feel we have a lot of games left yet that could make it a very interesting season.

Holy Cross and St. Lawrence battle to a scoreless draw.

Veteran Laurentian Keeper - John Douglas
4 consecutive shut-out

Holy Cross - Brandon Noseworthy
3 shut-outs this season

Holy Cross: 0 vs St. Lawrence: 0

A very defensive game over-all with no more than a handful of good scoring opportunities. The tie was probably a victory of sort for the Laurentians. This tie now moves the Laurentians into first place in the over-all standings. St. Lawrence only dressed 13 players but played a very smart defensive game in earning the tie. John Douglas was the Laurentians key performer with a couple of good saves. Great efforts came from the Laurentians back-line; Clinton Edwards, Marc Pittman, Colin Power and Allan Dalton. It was no doubt that Cross were the more dominating team of the day but Holy Cross  lacked any sort of  cohesiveness as an offensive unit and as a result they couldn`t put anything behind Douglas. Zack Wade missed on a few glorious shots . Tyler Forsey , Jon Hawco, Jake Warren nor Steve Delong could really penetrate the Laurentians full-backs. With this sort of contest  being played,  I`m sure the Laurentians hit the shower with a smile on their face while this would not be the case for the Holy Cross squad.

Holy Cross defeat the Laurentians 5 -2 in Challenge Cup Exhibition Soccer

 Holy Cross -5 vs St.Lawrence -2

 Game Sheet - New Faces
 Tyler Forcey - 2 Goals
Sean Drew - 2 goals

Holy Cross - 5 vs St. Lawrence -2

It was the red vs blue rivalry, that demonstrated in a exhibition match played in CBS on Saturday evening, that 2013 is going to be a great season. St. Lawrence took a 2 -1 first half lead on two goals scored by newcomer, Sean Drew. Drew played last season with Mount Pearl.
Then in the second half, play got a little chippy as Holy Cross, wore the Laurenrians down by focusing on a running game. In the end it was former Laurentians player, Tyler Forcey denting the net twice for Holy Cross and leading the Crusaders to a very impressive 5-2 victory.
Game - well played !
Overall, I felt the game was well played. I enjoyed the physical element to the game. It added a little flare to the match. I thought the officials did a great job in calling and controlling the game.  I was impressed with both teams newcomers, they all performed well.  Sean Drew looked good and  I feel Forcey  has the potential to be a stand-out this season with Holy Cross.
 Should be interesting !!!

Allan Ross

Allan Ross

The NLSA has added Allan Ross to it's list as a lifetime Honary Member. He joins a very respected group which includes - Gus Etchegary, Angus Barrett, Ben Lake,  Jeff Babstock,  George Innis and the late Newman Barrett.
Great Coach
I would have to think he was probably Newfoundland's greatest coach ever. He coached two Newfoundland teams to a National Title and he brought to this little island a different approach to the game. He taught us a technical asspect of the game that gave us a new approach. As a coach , he was a very hard customer but he got the most out of his players . He didn't take no pretty boy approach , he got his players to play hard and most of all he got respect from them for his efforts.

Congratulations Allan !!!

Allan's Ross Bio

The impact of “Builder” Alan Ross’s departure from Britain and arrival to the shores of Newfoundland and Labrador in early 1970 to teach at Memorial University of Newfoundland, and more importantly to coach the game of soccer, is still being felt today. In 1970, Alan’s first varsity soccer team not only went undefeated, it went on to win the Atlantic Intercollegiate Athletic Association Soccer Championship and then the Canadian Intercollegiate Athletic Union National Soccer Championship in Toronto. In 1971 his team went undefeated in winning the Atlantic Intercollegiate Athletic Association Soccer Championship and in 1973 his team again won the Atlantic Intercollegiate Athletic Association Soccer Championship. In 1974 he coached the provincial U-18 team, which won the National U-18 Soccer Championship. In 1973, 1977 and 1981 Allan was head coach of the province’s Jeux Canada Games Men’s Soccer Teams. In 1972 Alan was appointed assistant coach of Canada’s National/World Cup Soccer Team and served in that position for two years. During this time Alan earned his Canadian Soccer Association National Badge Coaching Certificate, which is the highest Canadian soccer certification. His leadership and efforts in developing and advancing the game of soccer at both the provincial and national levels did not go unnoticed. He raised the coaching, refereeing and playing standard throughout the province from 1970 to 1989 and changed the culture of how the game should be played and developed.

Recognizing what he had to offer, the Newfoundland and Labrador Soccer Association quickly offered to retain him as their Technical Director. Upon accepting the offer Alan immediately began the task of educating the Newfoundland and Labrador soccer community on what was necessary for soccer players to move forward to become national contenders on a regular basis. His first task was to build a network of certified coaches throughout the province. He accomplished this task by traveling throughout the province conducting coaching and referee clinics along with countless player seminars. As well, he took a number of players, coaches, referees, and some administrators from all regions of the province under his wing to mentor. Believing in what he had to offer, these once young coaches, officials, and players have turned out to be the movers and shakers of today’s Newfoundland and Labrador soccer community. These same people are directing the coaching and player development, overseeing the acquisition of funding for programming and building modern facilities.

While the teams and the players he coached achieved success, it was the change in mind set, the philosophy and the approach to moving the game forward that Alan accomplished most. In national and provincial soccer circles today, the name of Alan Ross is frequently mentioned and he can certainly be referred to as the “Father of the Modern Game” in Newfoundland and Labrador. In 1985, at the international level, Alan was a Technical Advisor for the Newfoundland and Labrador Soccer Association’s Host Committee, which was hosting a FIFA World Cup qualifying game in St. John’s between Canada and Honduras. This was a critical game for Canada – a win would put them through to the 1986 World Cup in Mexico. Canada defeated Honduras 2 to 1 and qualified for the World Cup.

In 1989 Alan was inducted into the Newfoundland and Labrador Soccer Hall of Fame and in1990 he was inducted into the St. John’s Soccer Hall of Fame. His success was recognized nationally in 2008 when he received the Award of Merit from the Canadian Soccer Association. This award was in recognition of his outstanding contribution to the growth and development of the sport of soccer in Canada at both the provincial and national levels.
