St. Lawrence Laurentians - 1967

Ray Farrell - (Front Row)  2nd from the left.

Ray was born in 1951. He grew up in St. Lawrence where Farrell's meadow became his soccer pitch. When he attended St. Augustine's High he was a star player for the House team called St. Dominic's and won the Scoring title twice.

He played Junior soccer from 1967 to 1970. In 1967 when Newfoundland first entered the National Challenge Cup, Ray, at the age of 16 played with the Senior Laurentians in Toronto against the Ontario Ballamena Club. St. Lawrence lost the game 3 -2 but it was a great experience for Ray's soccer career. He played both Junior and Senior until 1970 and then played one more year before moving to St. John's.

In 1973 Ray was a member of an All-Star Newfoundland team that toured England. Ray was singled out by English scouts as having great potential to advance in the game.

According to Wils Molloy who played with and against Ray, he was a very talented player. His heads-up play and his quickness with the ball on either wing gave many defenders a lot of trouble. He could score from almost impossible angles, low or high, it didn't matter.

His big test came in 1973 when he faced off against his beloved Laurentians on King George V pitch in St. John's. Ray scored two goals for Holy Cross in that game and was named the Most Valuable Player.

Ray was inducted into the St. Lawrence Hall of Fame in 1999.

Adult Recreation Soccer Coming to CBS

The CBS Soccer Association will be organizing an Adult Recreational League this summer. It will be an organized game of Recreational Soccer with players assigned to teams in a manner that will ensure that the teams are evenly matched. The emphasis will be on fun and there will be separate divisions for Male and Female players. Good to See Troy Pickett still Kicking

Troy Pickett ( back row : 4th from left)

Heineken Cup

Former Marystown native, Troy Pickett who was a standout with Marystown United back in the 90's, has since moved to British Columbia but still finds time to play a bit of ball.  Personally, I feel that Troy ranks up with some of the best players to ever play soccer in Marystown - George Hodder, Vince Pickett, Eugene Brushett, Howard Walsh, Craig & Scott Edwards, Jeremy Taylor,  David & Darrell Stewart, just to name a few.

Pictured above is a team with which Troy was recently suited up in BC and winners of the Heineken Cup.

Connolly wants back into soccer !

Gerald Connolly

Connolly looking to get back into soccer

Former Mount Pearl goalkeeper, Gerald Connolly,  is hoping to get back playing soccer in the Provincial Challenge Cup League this summer. Connolly who has been out of the sport the past few years feels he's ready to make the commitment to play the top level of soccer in Newfoundland. Connolly says, " He has dearly missed the game and now is looking for a second chance to play."
Connolly has potential
Gerald who has played soccer since he was just a kid developed into one of the top goalkeepers at the minor level. At the senior level, Gerald was fairly impressive. There were games I saw Connolly put in some top level performances.  I thought he was at his best when Mount Pearl played against the Laurentians.  His strength was his quickness , something that is imperative for a young man that is relatively short in structure- 5 ' 8".  He was a member of  the NL Canada Games team that won a Silver Medal in 2001. He was keeper for the Mount Pearl Challenge Cup Team that were crowned Provincial Champions in 2005. The Mount Pearl team went on to represent the NLSA at the National Challenge Cup in Quebec City.

Gerald - Good Luck and I hope to see you at the field again this summer !

NLSA name new Director of Officials

Mike Edmunds

The NLSA has named Mike Edmunds as its new "Director of Officials ". Mike has been one of Newfoundland's top whistle blowers in the sport of soccer in Newfoundland for the past five years. He certainly brings experience combined with knowledge and a passion for the sport to his new position. Mike replaces NLSA Hall of Famer, Brian Walsh who has retired from the game. I would personally like to congratulate Mike and thank Brian for his years of service to the game of soccer in Newfoundland.

Johnny Breen

Johnny Breen - Coach, Holy Cross Men's Soccer Team

Jake Stanford, the coach of the defending Challenge Cup Champions Holy Cross, has stepped down as head coach to assume head coaching duties with the NLSA "Girls" Canada Games Team. Stanford had been the coach of the Holy Cross Men's team for the past three years. He led Holy Cross to the Provincial Championship each of these years.

Merry Christmas !

A very Merry Christmas to all

At this festive time it is worth making the effort to thank all the people who visit the site and comment on the various issues and articles. It is really appreciated and I enjoy reading your insights, reactions, views and reading your opinions!

Great

The great thing about soccer is that despite the fact that we all believe;we would make a great coach, we all believe we know what players do right and wrong, we all believe we know how the game should be played,we all believe our opinions about players, coach's, refereeing decisions, goals, saves and games are absolutely right, we are all drawn together in an unfettered love of the game.

We can disagree about absolutely everything and yet we are united within the soccer family. We may have completely different opinions about the game than and we might even be able to have heated debates and argue about tiny details, but if you love the game, I have a lot more in common with you than I don’t.

See you in the new year !

Anyway, enough of this. As most of you are aware my wife and I are in the Arctic and our time here is drawing to a close. We will spend Christmas in Nunavut with our oldest daughter Melissa, and we will spend the New Year in Ontario with our other three children , Lori, Mark and Allison . Then it's back to St. John's where I will back at Senior Men's soccer in January getting soccer ready for the 2012 season.

I really do wish you and your families everywhere a very happy, healthy and safe Christmas.

Cheers

Gord
