Personally, I feel due to the fact that St.Lawrence is to celebrate a Homecoming in August, a full day full should be set aside during this period to celebrate the fact that this little community is recognized as the "The Soccer Capital of Canada"
and we have a "Soccer Day in St.Lawrence"

P.E.I. soccer coach wins appeal over failure to travel to tournament

Soccer coach Mike Redmond has won his appeal of a two-year suspension by the P.E.I. Soccer Association.The association banned Redmond, who had been coaching the province's Canada Games team for three years, from any involvement in the sport after a senior women's team he was coaching failed to play at the Senior Women's National Championship in Newfoundland and Labrador last fall.The team was not able to secure enough players to attend the tournament.

The appeals committee says the P.E.I. Soccer Association was wrong to blame Redmond for the team's actions. It said there was no way the coach should have been held responsible for the team not raising enough money to make the trip.

The committee determined Redmond did what he could to get the team to the tournament.
Redmond was supposed to continue with his coaching of the provincial women's team playing at this summer's Canada Games on P.E.I., but he has been away from the team since the suspension came down mid-winter. He's not sure if he'll be joining the team now that he's free to coach again.

The St.Lawrence Soccer Association are bringing in the Masterless Men this summer during the Homecoming. The Association are using this event as a major soccer fundraiser. They are presently looking at the possibility of having a second showing on Friday Aug 7th.

The SLSA has only 10 days to see if enough people are interested in attending this show before they book them for a Friday night show.

Tickets price are $22.50. The Saturday night (Aug.8th) showing is sold out.

I've done an interview today with Jacinta Wall from CBC Radio on Senior Men's soccer.The interview will be carried today 29 -April - 2009 at 6 o'clock . Jacinta Wall - Jacinta Wall is the voice of daytime news at CBC Radio.

Jacinta is also the host of Time Out, a program about the provincial sports scene. Time Out airs Monday to Thursday at 6 PM/5:30 PM in Labrador on CBC Radio One. The interview will be carried today at 6 pm NL Time, tune in.

NLSA 2009 Senior Men's AGM

Corner Brook is back and six teams have entered the 2009 Molson Challenge Cup provincial senior men’s soccer competition. Cup commissioner Gordon Dunphy predicts “an excellent season with close and exciting games that will promote soccer a great deal.”
St. Lawrence, Feildians, Mount Pearl and Holy Cross are back from last season and the Canada Games Club will participate on an exhibition basis making for “a good full schedule of games” according to Dunphy.
He explained that team registration has a May 20 deadline and the season opens June 20. Based on the Canadian Soccer Association rule, Dunphy said “if a player plays even one game for a club he’s tied to that club for the entire season. Canada Games players wishing to play with a Challenge Cup team after the completion of the Canada Games may do so by informing the NLSA in writing prior to the start of the 2009 season.”
“Any Games player failing to notify the NLSA will be deemed illegible to play during the Labor Day championship series,” Dunphy stressed. “To be eligible for the final weekend, a player must have dressed for 25% of his team’s games. “
He disclosed that provincial soccer will start to promote Challenge Cup competition this season by bringing Challenge Cup to Grand Falls-Windsor, Gander, Clarenville and Conception Bay South. Our Canada Games team could be showcased in these towns along with all four of our Challenge Cup Teams.
Plans call for a June 13 all-star game in St. Lawrence. It will open the soccer season with defending champions St. Lawrence facing a provincial all-star squad.
The season all-star team and individual awards winners will be chosen by a selection committee comprised of a representative from each club plus five members from the NLSA. All-stars and award winners must participate in a minimum of 70 percent of their team’s schedule to be considered an all-star or an individual award winner in 2009.
The Canada Games Players would not be eligible for either all-star selection or individual awards as they are playing on an exhibition basis only. However, Canada Games players are eligible to win the league’s scoring title.
Each game will have a total value of three points with a winning team earning three points. Each game ending in a tie will have each team awarded one point. During the final weekend, all play-off games that are tied will go to two fifteen minute extra time periods followed by penalties if the score remains tied.

Dunphy explained that “to allow Corner Brook to re-enter the league the NLSA has agreed to assemble a schedule that will permit Corner Brook to play a reduced number of games. Each of Corner Brook’s away games will be worth six points per game, while all of their home games will be worth three points per game.”
“AUA Soccer uses a format comparable to the one the NLSA will adapt in 2009.”
“Based on a 20-game schedule, St. Lawrence, Holy Cross, Feildians, Mount Pearl and Canada Games play 20 games at three points per game for a total of a possible 60 points. Each club will play ten home games and ten away games.”
”Corner Brook will play St. Lawrence, Holy Cross, Feildians, Mount Pearl and Canada Games twice at home and once on the road. This means ten homes games worth three points each for 30 points and five away games worth six points each for 30 points for a possible 60-point total.”
Gate charges have been set at $3.00 per game with children under ten free. : Final Weekend games will cost $ 6.00 per game for adults with children under-ten free.
The card situation for 2009 regular season will be the same as in 2008. Four yellow cards will see a one-game suspension while seven card mean two games, ten cards mean three games) and 12 cards mean four games.. Dismissals, red cards, will see players/team staff suspended for: one game for one card, three games for two cards five games and a hearing with the NLSA discipline committee for three cards.
However there is change made to the cards in the provincial 2009 play-offs has two yellows or a red card in any one game drawing suspensions.

Congratulations Robert !!!

You can bet that the family and friends of Robert Slaney are very proud and so they should be. I'm a life long Leaf Fan and now to have, what I would refer to as, one of our very own to wear the Maple Leaf makes me very proud. I'm sure I can speak for all of St.Lawrence when I say, St.Lawrence is very proud as well.
When I was down in Florida on Easter vacation, I received no less than ten emails informing me of Slaney's signing with Toronto. The 20-year-old son of Val and Edith said his family and friends in all of Newfoundland and Labrador and Cape Breton were ecstatic to hear the news of his NHL contract. The pride of Upper Island Cove, N.L. has signed a three-year contract with the Toronto Maple Leafs.“It’s been in discussion for the past two weeks and we got her done,” said Slaney, who led the Screaming Eagles in the 2008-09 regular season both in goals, with 36, and points, with 81. Slaney was honoured twice at the Screaming Eagles’ recent awards banquet, as the team’s regular season scoring champ and with the fans’ choice award.

St. Lawrence Homecoming ???

This summer, in August, St.Lawrence will be celebrating a Homecoming. I would like to suggest to the Homecoming Committee to have Robert there for the opening celebrations. I'm sure he will be the pride of every one of his relatives on the Burin Peninsula, including the Slaney's the Hollett's and every Leaf fan.

Gearing up for the 2009 Soccer Season

Blog has 60, 000

Last winter I did ED-3801, a Multi- Media Course at MUN. Presently I am teaching at the College of the North Atlantic and as a part of my contract for employment, I was required to complete a Post- Secondary Certificate from Memorial. Actually, word had it that ED 3801 was supposed to be one of the hardest courses to complete ( I got 90% in the course).
However needless to say, I loved the Multi-Media course because I have a lot of interest in any form of media. I also felt this form of media would be a perfect forum for soccer in Newfoundland Labrador.

Blog's Goal

Hopefully, you enjoy my Blog. My ultimate goal for the Blog is to get 550,000 hits; that's one hit for every person that lives in our province. To date, my Blog has averaged 6,000 hits a month. Yes, our snow is now slowly disappearing and I am certainly looking forward to the 2009 season. My Blog and my Coach's Corner will again be very active this summer.I have also registered at MUN this summer to do some additional studies. So no doubt, it will be a very busy season ahead for me. I am enjoying the work that goes along with being VP of Senior Men's Soccer with the NLSA. I am looking forward to the AGM. It should be very interesting !!!

Laura Breen Named to Canadian University Team

Laura Breen of the Memorial University women’s soccer team has been named to the Canadian women’s university soccer team that will travel to Belgrade, Serbia June 30th to July 12th for the 2009 Summer Universiade, commonly referred to as the FISU Games.

Breen, a native of St. John’s, had an outstanding year in 2008. She led the Atlantic conference in scoring with nine goals. Her play earned her the conference MVP award, in addition to a place on the conference first all-star team. For the first time in her four year varsity career Breen was named a first team All-Canadian. She has previously been named a second team All-Canadian twice (2005 and 2006).

The tournament in Belgrade will be Breen’s second FISU Games. She travelled to Bangkok, Thailand in August 2007 where Canada finished in tenth place.

The FISU Games team was selected from a camp consisting of the top university soccer players in Canada. The FISU team plans to travel to Belgrade on June 22nd for a pretournament training camp.

The Universiade is an international sporting and cultural festival which is staged every two years in a different city and which is second in importance only to the Olympic Games. FISU stands for Federation Internationale du Sport Universitaire (International University Sports Federation).

The 2^nd Annual Stars and Legends Awards Gala took place on Saturday, March 28, at the Sheraton Hotel. This year’s awards gala, which was co-hosted by Jonathan Crowe of CBC’s Here and Now, and Dr. TA Loeffler of Memorial University, guest speaker for the evening was Dr. Steve Norris of the Canadian Sport Centre, Calgary. It was a beautiful evening, well attended and it was just great to see a great number of former legends as well as the new inductees in attendance.

NLSA

The NLSA was well represented, with six members of its core executive in attendance. Then, with soccer having five finalists in various categories it sure added to the excitement of the evening. A big congratulations must go out to Nicole Adams who won the senior female athlete of the year category. For me to see young Sean Edwards from St. Lawrence, my brother Shane and long time veteran coach Scott Betts, there with the very best on the evening program, made me very proud. They were there as NLSA winners and were competing with the provinces best. This sure illustrates to me that these individuals, and in general the sport of soccer, has got to be doing something right. No, I'm not forgetting the Kirby/ The Dock women's team. Actually, if I were a betting man, I predict the best is yet to come for this team.

NLSA Awards -2009

For some time now people have being saying that soccer needs a more formal and eloquent banquet to recognize their province best. Well guess what - Already, the NLSA has plans made and has scheduled the NLSA Annual General Meeting, Awards Ceremony, and Hall of Fame Induction Banquet for 2009. It will be held in St. John's on November 20-21^st at the Holiday Inn.

Patrick Parfrey is Head Coach of the Rock.His team has won an amazing three National Gold Medals in the past four years.




When I spoke with Jonathon Crowe he said, "Gord your not going to make me run up them pipes?" He was referring to the flunnen pipes in the West Brook. When I was coach of the St.Lawrence Laurentians,he did some video coverage for CBC of the players in training for me and running up this hill. Obviously,he never forgot it.

Clear the Track here is Len and Shack !!!! "Click Here"

Known to all in hockey as "The Entertainer" or "The Nose," Eddie Shack was a unique talent. Not too many players have a song made that is inspired by his play, called, "Clear the Track, Here Comes Shack."

Shack was working in a butcher shop when he decided to try out for the Guelph Biltmores. When he made the team and moved away from his family, he left with the knowledge that he could always go back and be a butcher. From 1952 to 1957 he played in Guelph before making the move to the New York Rangers farm team in the AHL, the Providence Reds. After only one season in Providence, he was called up to New York where he was expected to become a scorer. Shack was not living up to expectations and when the Rangers tried to make a trade in 1960 with the Detroit Red Wings that involved Red Kelly, the transaction was cancelled when Kelly refused to report to New York. He was finally traded to the Toronto Maple Leafs later that year.
Moving to the Leafs was a resurgence for Shack as he fit in with the team right away. In his first full season with the team, the Leafs brought home the Stanley Cup and won three in a row from 1961-62 to 1963-64. Shack scored a Cup-winning goal and later told the press that the puck had gone off his behind and that he was just trying to get out of the way! Shack won another cup with Toronto in 1967 before being traded to the Boston Bruins the next season.

Shack moved around to several other teams including the L.A. Kings, Buffalo Sabres, and Pittsburgh Penguins before ending up back in Toronto as a Leaf. He retired from the game with four Stanley Cup rings and having made three consecutive All-Star appearances from '62 to '64.

Want to participate in a trip of a lifetime to England

Gerard Kennedy organizing a trip to England

I am organizing a trip to England to watch & play a few games. Here are the details as of today March 18, 2009.

I met with Chris Hodges today. He is the English contact. He has fantastic connections in the soccer world in England. He is in the St. John's area this week doing minor soccer camps.

At Chris' suggestion the trip will be nine days in duration, leaving Newfoundland after supper on Tuesday night October 13, 2009, through Halifax and onto London arriving around 9am on Wednesday morning October 14th. That night we will see England play Belarus in a World Cup Qualifier, to be played at Wembley Stadium in London.

Chris has indicated we will see at least three other league matches and play two friendlies. We do not know what premiership games we will see as the schedule is not released for next season until the end of June.

Chris will arrange a round of golf and a "day at the races".....the horse track. We will also be visiting Liverpool. We will also tour a couple of premiership stadiums. Which ones haven't been determined. We will be returning on October 22nd.


Right now I have 10 people interested. I need another 6 and the cutoff day is May 1st. This will be a fantastic trip. Anyone interested should contact me for further details regarding costs.

Fan kills soccer player

4BAGHDAD (AP) — Police say an Iraqi soccer player has been shot dead just as he was about to kick what could have been the tying goal in a weekend game south of Baghdad.
Police Maj. Muthanna Khalid says a striker from the Buhairat amateur team was facing only the goalie during a Sunday match in Hillah when a supporter of the rival Sinjar club shot him in the head in the final minute of play.Sinjar was leading 1-0 when the shooting occurred. Khalid said a spectator was arrested.

This is a 35 year old photo of me when I was 16 years old and in grade 11. This picture brings to mind one thing in particular.

I remember playing soccer with St.Lawrence and we were in Burin, playing against their team. After the game was over and we had beaten the Burin team like we always did, one of Burin's fans came on the field and he tried to cut my hair. But the bus driver, the late Tommy Turpin came to my rescue and stopped the fan . Good old days, I guess

We are seeking to fill a permanent position with an enthusiastic, energetic individual who can:

1. Plan, organize and manage day-to-day operations for CBS soccer
2. Hire, train and manage summer staff in coordination with the technical director
3. Manage facilities, personnel and equipment required for house league and all-star soccer
4. Manage general administration of the soccer association.
5. Act as primary liaison to the CBSSA board of directors for the association.

Start date: April 2009

Hours: Full-time hours Monday – Friday. Some weeknight or weekend work will be required.

Rate of pay: subject to qualifications and would include travel and cell phone benefits
