Gearing up for the 2009 Soccer Season

Blog has 60, 000

Last winter I did ED-3801, a Multi- Media Course at MUN. Presently I am teaching at the College of the North Atlantic and as a part of my contract for employment, I was required to complete a Post- Secondary Certificate from Memorial. Actually, word had it that ED 3801 was supposed to be one of the hardest courses to complete ( I got 90% in the course).
However needless to say, I loved the Multi-Media course because I have a lot of interest in any form of media. I also felt this form of media would be a perfect forum for soccer in Newfoundland Labrador.

Blog's Goal

Hopefully, you enjoy my Blog. My ultimate goal for the Blog is to get 550,000 hits; that's one hit for every person that lives in our province. To date, my Blog has averaged 6,000 hits a month. Yes, our snow is now slowly disappearing and I am certainly looking forward to the 2009 season. My Blog and my Coach's Corner will again be very active this summer.I have also registered at MUN this summer to do some additional studies. So no doubt, it will be a very busy season ahead for me. I am enjoying the work that goes along with being VP of Senior Men's Soccer with the NLSA. I am looking forward to the AGM. It should be very interesting !!!

Laura Breen Named to Canadian University Team

Laura Breen of the Memorial University women’s soccer team has been named to the Canadian women’s university soccer team that will travel to Belgrade, Serbia June 30th to July 12th for the 2009 Summer Universiade, commonly referred to as the FISU Games.

Breen, a native of St. John’s, had an outstanding year in 2008. She led the Atlantic conference in scoring with nine goals. Her play earned her the conference MVP award, in addition to a place on the conference first all-star team. For the first time in her four year varsity career Breen was named a first team All-Canadian. She has previously been named a second team All-Canadian twice (2005 and 2006).

The tournament in Belgrade will be Breen’s second FISU Games. She travelled to Bangkok, Thailand in August 2007 where Canada finished in tenth place.

The FISU Games team was selected from a camp consisting of the top university soccer players in Canada. The FISU team plans to travel to Belgrade on June 22nd for a pretournament training camp.

The Universiade is an international sporting and cultural festival which is staged every two years in a different city and which is second in importance only to the Olympic Games. FISU stands for Federation Internationale du Sport Universitaire (International University Sports Federation).

The 2^nd Annual Stars and Legends Awards Gala took place on Saturday, March 28, at the Sheraton Hotel. This year’s awards gala, which was co-hosted by Jonathan Crowe of CBC’s Here and Now, and Dr. TA Loeffler of Memorial University, guest speaker for the evening was Dr. Steve Norris of the Canadian Sport Centre, Calgary. It was a beautiful evening, well attended and it was just great to see a great number of former legends as well as the new inductees in attendance.

The NLSA was well represented, with six members of its core executive in attendance. Then, with soccer having five finalists in various categories it sure added to the excitement of the evening. A big congratulations must go out to Nicole Adams who won the senior female athlete of the year category. For me to see young Sean Edwards from St. Lawrence, my brother Shane and long time veteran coach Scott Betts, there with the very best on the evening program, made me very proud. They were there as NLSA winners and were competing with the provinces best. This sure illustrates to me that these individuals, and in general the sport of soccer, has got to be doing something right. No, I'm not forgetting the Kirby/ The Dock women's team. Actually, if I were a betting man, I predict the best is yet to come for this team.

NLSA Awards -2009

For some time now people have being saying that soccer needs a more formal and eloquent banquet to recognize their province best. Well guess what - Already, the NLSA has plans made and has scheduled the NLSA Annual General Meeting, Awards Ceremony, and Hall of Fame Induction Banquet for 2009. It will be held in St. John's on November 20-21^st at the Holiday Inn.

Patrick Parfrey is Head Coach of the Rock.His team has won an amazing three National Gold Medals in the past four years.




When I spoke with Jonathon Crowe he said, "Gord your not going to make me run up them pipes?" He was referring to the flunnen pipes in the West Brook. When I was coach of the St.Lawrence Laurentians,he did some video coverage for CBC of the players in training for me and running up this hill. Obviously,he never forgot it.

Known to all in hockey as "The Entertainer" or "The Nose," Eddie Shack was a unique talent. Not too many players have a song made that is inspired by his play, called, "Clear the Track, Here Comes Shack."

Shack was working in a butcher shop when he decided to try out for the Guelph Biltmores. When he made the team and moved away from his family, he left with the knowledge that he could always go back and be a butcher. From 1952 to 1957 he played in Guelph before making the move to the New York Rangers farm team in the AHL, the Providence Reds. After only one season in Providence, he was called up to New York where he was expected to become a scorer. Shack was not living up to expectations and when the Rangers tried to make a trade in 1960 with the Detroit Red Wings that involved Red Kelly, the transaction was cancelled when Kelly refused to report to New York. He was finally traded to the Toronto Maple Leafs later that year.
Moving to the Leafs was a resurgence for Shack as he fit in with the team right away. In his first full season with the team, the Leafs brought home the Stanley Cup and won three in a row from 1961-62 to 1963-64. Shack scored a Cup-winning goal and later told the press that the puck had gone off his behind and that he was just trying to get out of the way! Shack won another cup with Toronto in 1967 before being traded to the Boston Bruins the next season.

Shack moved around to several other teams including the L.A. Kings, Buffalo Sabres, and Pittsburgh Penguins before ending up back in Toronto as a Leaf. He retired from the game with four Stanley Cup rings and having made three consecutive All-Star appearances from '62 to '64.

Want to participate in a trip of a lifetime to England

I am organizing a trip to England to watch & play a few games. Here are the details as of today March 18, 2009.

I met with Chris Hodges today. He is the English contact. He has fantastic connections in the soccer world in England. He is in the St. John's area this week doing minor soccer camps.

At Chris' suggestion the trip will be nine days in duration, leaving Newfoundland after supper on Tuesday night October 13, 2009, through Halifax and onto London arriving around 9am on Wednesday morning October 14th. That night we will see England play Belarus in a World Cup Qualifier, to be played at Wembley Stadium in London.

Chris has indicated we will see at least three other league matches and play two friendlies. We do not know what premiership games we will see as the schedule is not released for next season until the end of June.

Chris will arrange a round of golf and a "day at the races".....the horse track. We will also be visiting Liverpool. We will also tour a couple of premiership stadiums. Which ones haven't been determined. We will be returning on October 22nd.


Right now I have 10 people interested. I need another 6 and the cutoff day is May 1st. This will be a fantastic trip. Anyone interested should contact me for further details regarding costs.

4BAGHDAD (AP) — Police say an Iraqi soccer player has been shot dead just as he was about to kick what could have been the tying goal in a weekend game south of Baghdad.
Police Maj. Muthanna Khalid says a striker from the Buhairat amateur team was facing only the goalie during a Sunday match in Hillah when a supporter of the rival Sinjar club shot him in the head in the final minute of play.Sinjar was leading 1-0 when the shooting occurred. Khalid said a spectator was arrested.

After the game was over and we had beaten the Burin team like we always did, one of Burin's fans came on the field and he tried to cut my hair. Thomas L. Gallant - Builder
Tom Gallant was the founding member of Judo in Newfoundland and Labrador. He started Judo clubs in Corner Brook, Stephenville, and St. John’s and was the founding member of the provincial association in 1969. He served as Vice President of Judo Canada for four consecutive terms and was the founder of the Atlantic Council for Judo which organized all four Atlantic Provinces in one group. Gallant is a National "A" Referee, the only national "A" ranked in the province, and he has officiated at the national and international levels. As a Level 3 Certified Coach for Canada, Gallant coached over 3,000 athletes in Newfoundland and Labrador and produced 19 Black Belts, four national medals, and over 40 Atlantic medals. One of Gallant’s biggest contributions to building the sport of Judo was his work developing, implementing and setting a standard for Judo Canada’s national coaching certification program.

Andrea Hutchens – Athlete
Andrea Hutchens proved to be one of Newfoundland and Labrador’s best female basketball players to play the game. She achieved outstanding success at the university, national, and international levels from 1991-1995. Her recruitment to The University of Winnipeg’s Wesmen basketball team turned out to be a career highlight. Hutchens was part of a team that won 88 consecutive games and three straight national championships. Because of her success at the University of Winnipeg, Hutchens was selected to play on several national teams from 1993-1995 and competed in a number of international tournaments. In October 1995, Hutchens was elected to the Basketball Canada Hall of Fame.

Harold St. Croix – Athlete
Harold St. Croix, through his persistence and dedication, excelled in the sport of athletics. In 1976, St. Croix took third place at the National Juvenile Division, winning Newfoundland’s first ever national cross-country medal. Eighteen years later, he won a bronze medal at the National Cross Country Running Championships. St. Croix holds the all comers road race records for the half marathon and the twenty-mile road race. He won the Tely Ten six times and is one of only two people who have run the Tely Ten in under 50 minutes. St. Croix is the only runner who has won the Tely Ten in three consecutive decades - 1970’s, 1980’s, and 1990’s.

Iain Robert Tennent – Athlete
Iain Tennent was an outstanding swimmer. He competed at the Canada Games and Canadian Nationals, earning one gold and two silver medals. In 1997, he was named a CIAU All Canadian, AUAA Swimmer of the Year, and the University of New Brunswick Athlete of the Year. In 1994 he won four gold medals at the AUAA Swimming Championship. In 1993 he won four gold medals at the AUAA Swimming Championship, was named a CIAU All Canadian, received the Newfoundland Athlete of the Year Award, the St. John’s Athlete of the Year Award, the Newfoundland Unisys Quest for Excellence Award and the AUAA /UNB Swimmer of the Year Award. In 1992 he won four gold medals at the AUAA Swimming Championship, was named the AUAA /UNB Swimmer of the Year and Rookie of the Year. Tennent has set 32 records in Short Course swimming which still stand today. At the international level, he was a member of the Canadian Junior Swim Team which competed in the ‘8 Nations Cup’ in France in 1991.

Donald Richard Yetman – Athlete/Builder
Don Yetman provided the province with many great years of exciting hockey and baseball. He played with three provincial senior championship baseball teams, two provincial junior championship hockey teams, and the St. John’s Townies which won four consecutive Master League All Newfoundland Baseball Championships. Yetman earned most valuable player awards in baseball, hockey, and soccer. Though his accomplishments were great as a player, he also gave unselfishly back to the community as a coach, spending more than 20 years coaching minor hockey and minor baseball. In 1986, Don Yetman was inducted into the St. John’s Baseball Hall of Fam

Joseph "Joe" Wadden enjoyed a remarkable athletic career as an athlete, coach, and contributing executive volunteer. He excelled in baseball and basketball. Wadden was a member of four provincial senior baseball championship teams and two provincial junior basketball championship teams. He coached baseball teams to three provincial junior titles, two provincial senior titles, and two Atlantic championships. Wadden also served as secretary and president of the Newfoundland Amateur Baseball Association. Joseph Wadden has been inducted into the Newfoundland and Labrador Baseball Hall of Fame and the Newfoundland and Labrador Basketball Hall of Fame

Stars and Legends Awards Gala set for March

The 2009 Stars and Legends Awards Gala will take place on March 28, 2009 at the Sheraton Hotel Newfoundland. This celebration of sports excellence combines the Provincial Annual Awards and the Newfoundland and Labrador Sports Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony into one commemorative event.

The event will be co-hosted by Jonathan Crowe of CBC News: Here and Now and Dr. TA Loeffler of Memorial University. This year's event will feature a Keynote Address by Dr. Steve Norris of the Canadian Sport Centre, Calgary.

"Last year's event was a huge success and we anticipate this year will be no different," said Doug Fowler, president of Sport Newfoundland and Labrador."It's very important to recognize the accomplishments of our athletes, coaches and volunteers at this prestigious event and we look forward to another successful Gala this year."

The Newfoundland and Labrador Sports Hall of Fame recognizes, honours and serves as a tribute to individuals, groups, associations, families or teams who have achieved extraordinary distinction in either amateur or professional sport, or have given distinguished services and/or made a major contribution to the development and advancement of amateur sport in the province.

The Sport Newfoundland and Labrador Provincial Annual Awards recognizes the best athletic achievements in the past year. Awards are presented in seven categories: Senior and Junior Male and Female Athlete; Coach; Team; and Executive. Nominations for these awards are accepted only from provincial sport organizations which are members of Sport Newfoundland and Labrador.

The Latest Update on David Beckham

MILAN — The vice-president of AC Milan says the club's offer of $3 million US for David Beckham was the market rate and it won't be increased.

The Los Angeles Galaxy recently turned down the offer, calling it 'ridiculous.' Adriano Galliani said in Saturday editions of La Gazzetta dello Sport there won't be another offer.

"Absolutely not," Galliani said. "I have experience of knowing a player's value and in the European market it doesn't make any sense to spend more. Milan has made an offer that it feels is right for a loan of about eight months ... from Nov. 30, David will be available for zero."

Beckham has a clause in his Galaxy contract that would allow him to leave at the end of this year.

Beckham closer to staying with AC Milan

David Beckham

MILAN — AC Milan vice-president Adriano Galliani said the club was closer to completing David Beckham's transfer from the Los Angeles Galaxy.

“In the past few hours we have taken steps forward,” Galliani told La Gazzetta dello Sport after arriving back in Milan following the team's 1-1 draw with Werder Bremen in the UEFA Cup late Wednesday.

There have been conflicting reports the past few days over the state of the negotiations following the expiration of last Friday's Major League Soccer-imposed deadline.

Milan's owner, Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi, has said he is hopeful that the England international star would remain at his club.

Speaking after a meeting with British Prime Minister Gordon Brown, Berlusconi said: “I would like it if he stays with Milan because his passing is essential.”

St.Lawrence Laurentian inside sources are revealing that Junior Edwards will be coaching the St. Lawrence Laurentians in 2009.

"Hall of Famer"

Edwards is one of the best soccer players to ever wear the Laurentian colors. He is a member of the Newfoundland and Labrador Soccer Hall of Fame, the Burin Peninsula Soccer Hall of Fame, and the St. Lawrence Soccer Hall of Fame.In 2008 he was inducted into Sport NL "Sports Hall of Fame. He is only the fourth Laurentian to bestowed this honor. Former, St. Lawrence Laurentian greats, Gus Etchegary, Wils Molloy and Norm Kelly are the other three.

Experienced coach

Edwards has previously coached the St. Lawrence Senior Laurentians on three different occasions. He first coached St. Lawrence in 1991. He again coached the Laurentians from 1994 - 1997. He followed this up by coaching the Laurentians from 2000 - 2004. During his years of coaching he has coached the Laurentians to five provincial Challenge Cup Championships; 1995, 1996, 1997, 2000 and 2001. Undoubtedly, his greatest achievement occurred, at the National level in 2002, when he coached St. Lawrence to a National Silver Medal in St. John's.

Truth or Fiction ?

Reports are further mounting that the St.Lawrence Laurentians will be having former Holy Cross all -star player Tony Mullett joining Junior Edwards as his assistant coach in 2009. Inside sources reveal that Mullett will be taking care of the players that are living in the St. John's area. Edwards, who is presently employed at Voisey's Bay working a shift schedule that involves a 2 week on 2 week off rotataion will be very hard pressed to perform the full time duties as head coach of the Laurentians by himself.

13 players

Word has it that the Laurentians are hard pressed themselves for players in 2009 and so far they have 13 players that are committed. Strangely enough the vast majority of these players are now residing in St. John's.

After I posted this latest post concerning the St.Lawrence Laurentian coaching situation, for the 2009 season, I received a very interesting telephone call. The caller asked me, " How could my about the coaching situation be true because at this point, after the resignation of Derek Strang, the caller further stated, the St.Lawrence Soccer Association haven't even advertised the coaching position for the 2009 season?

Rob Antle is appointed NLSA Director of Officials

Rob Antle of St. John’s has been appointed chair of officials for the Newfoundland and Labrador Soccer Association. His appointment was announced by Association president Doug Redmond.“We are extremely pleased to have Rob Antle accept this important position,”
