This is a Newfoundland and Labrador Soccer Association

sanctioned event.

This Auction is a fundraiser for the 2013 Canada Games Men's Soccer Team that will be representing Newfoundland and Labrador in Sherbrooke in August 2013. They are training hard and will be traveling to various tournaments to prepare for the Canada Games.

The auction started on February 10th, 2012 and will run until 7:00 pm (NL Time) on Monday, February 27, 2012.

You must log in each time you come to the site and you are eligible to bid on any item at any time of the day.

You will be automatically added to the distribution list for the auction.

The leading bid will always be identified. If you place a bid and you are outbid you will receive notification of that. So keep bidding to support the Team.

Personal information will only be used for the purpose of this auction.

When the Auction closes the winning bidders will be contacted to arrange payment and pickup/local delivery of items. Cash is preferred.

Walt Mavin

Veteran coach, Walt Mavin has been named Mount Pearl's 2011 "Coach of the Year" . Mavin coached the Mount Pearl Sr. Men's team to inches away from winning the Provincial Challenge Cup in 2011. He led Mount Pearl to victory over St. Lawrence in semi - final play and his team took Holy Cross to pk's in the championship game. He also coached MUN Seahawks ladies team in 2011.

Mount Pearl Masters Team

Mount Pearl Masters team won Mount Pearl's 2011 , "Team of the Year Award." Mount Pearl Masters won the city title and also won the Provincial "A" Masters Championship defeating St. Lawrence 2-0 in the championship game. Mount Pearl then finished 4th in the Eastern Canadian Championship.

Kristen Anstey - MUN's Loss & Cumberland University Gain

Kristen Anstey has accepted a 4 year scholarship from Cumberland University in Tennessee. She will be joining Cumberland in mid Aug 2012. After many suitors she couldn't turn down the offer that was presented to her by Cumberland. She will be playing in the NAIA and is very much looking forward to her career at Cumberland. At present she is playing and training with the St. John's U 18 girls under coach Jake Stanford where she will play in the Jubilee Shield this summer.

Albert & Marjorie - Proud Parents

This is something both Marjorie and Albert are very proud of. They have given Kristen great support and have realized that she has worked so hard over the years, a lot of the time on her own and they have put thousands of miles on themselves as well. So I guess it is true, hard work and dedication do pay off.

Moving On !

Tyler Forsey, NLSA's 2011 Junior Player of the Year had great success during his tryout for Atlantic SC earlier this month. Tyler earned a spot on the Under-20 Men's soccer club which was formed in 2011 and is based out of Saint John, NB.The team will play in the New England division of the Super 20 USL league, the largest organization of elite-level soccer leagues in North America, from April to July.

Young Forsey has also been offered a full scholarship to play soccer at Dalhousie University in Nova Scotia. While I feel this is a great offer and something that Forsey had to accept, it really doesn't say a lot about our sports programs at MUN. Far to often, too many of our young top athletes are getting lured to other universities and I'm not only talking about USA and mainland Canada Universities. I am aware of some of our athletes having gone to UPEI and Universities in both Nova Scotia and New Brunswick. To be quite frank, MUN NOT OFFERING ANY SORT OF ATHLETIC SCHOLARSHIPS disgusts me.

Mike Edmunds

The NLSA has named Mike Edmunds as its new "Director of Officials ". Mike has been one of Newfoundland's top whistle blowers in the sport of soccer in Newfoundland for the past five years. He certainly brings experience combined with knowledge and a passion for the sport to his new position. Mike replaces NLSA Hall of Famer, Brian Walsh who has retired from the game. I would personally like to congratulate Mike and thank Brian for his years of service to the game of soccer in Newfoundland.

Johnny Breen - Coach, Holy Cross Men's Soccer Team

Jake Stanford, the coach of the defending Challenge Cup Champions Holy Cross, has stepped down as head coach to assume head coaching duties with the NLSA "Girls" Canada Games Team. Stanford had been the coach of the Holy Cross Men's team for the past three years. He led Holy Cross to the Provincial Championship each of these years.
Johnny Breen, who is Holy Cross's newly appointed coach is no slouch when it comes to Provincial Soccer in Newfoundland. He was a standout during his playing days. As a coach, he also has very impressive credentials and his certification makes him nationally qualified.

Jordi Slaney

Jordi Slaney of St. Lawrence will attend a two-week training camp on an invitation from Toronto FC as he looks for a berth on the Toronto FC Academy Under-17 team.

The all-star midfielder has been training at the National Training Center-Atlantic in Halifax for the past two years and has established himself as one of the top players in Atlantic Canada. In 2011, Slaney was captain of the Under -16 Atlantic Team.

A very Merry Christmas to all

At this festive time it is worth making the effort to thank all the people who visit the site and comment on the various issues and articles. It is really appreciated and I enjoy reading your insights, reactions, views and reading your opinions!

Great

The great thing about soccer is that despite the fact that we all believe;we would make a great coach, we all believe we know what players do right and wrong, we all believe we know how the game should be played,we all believe our opinions about players, coach's, refereeing decisions, goals, saves and games are absolutely right, we are all drawn together in an unfettered love of the game.

We can disagree about absolutely everything and yet we are united within the soccer family. We may have completely different opinions about the game than and we might even be able to have heated debates and argue about tiny details, but if you love the game, I have a lot more in common with you than I don’t.

See you in the new year !

Anyway, enough of this. As most of you are aware my wife and I are in the Arctic and our time here is drawing to a close. We will spend Christmas in Nunavut with our oldest daughter Melissa, and we will spend the New Year in Ontario with our other three children , Lori, Mark and Allison . Then it's back to St. John's where I will back at Senior Men's soccer in January getting soccer ready for the 2012 season.

I really do wish you and your families everywhere a very happy, healthy and safe Christmas.

Condolences - Newman Bartlett

I would like to send condolences to the family and friends of Newman Bartlett who passed away on Saturday, December 3 -2011. Newman who was a former NLSA President Bartlett and the fifth individual to be recognized by the soccer association with an NLSA Honorary Life Membership.
Bartlett's soccer career includes playing, officiating, coaching and administration during a 50-year period.He played with Grand Bank Gee Bees teams in the 1960s, including the 1960, 1961 and 1962 provincial champions, prior to graduating to refereeing and coaching. From executive positions with Grand Bank soccer, he moved to the Burin Peninsula Soccer Association as president and to the Newfoundland and Labrador Soccer Association.He is a member of the Newfoundland and Labrador Soccer Hall of Fame and the Burin Peninsula Soccer Hall of Fame.

Doug Redmond of St. John’s was re-elected for his fifth two-year term as president of the Newfoundland and Labrador Soccer Association during its annual general meeting at the Battery Hotel in St. John’s. Redmond was unopposed for the position.Also unopposed and re-elected were youth soccer VP Judi Kelloway of Burin and secretary Dave LeGrow of Mount Pearl.

Senior male VP Gordon Dunphy of St. John’s, senior female VP Dr. Denise Hickey of St. John’s and treasurer Doug Kirby of St. John’s are entering the second year of their two-year terms.

12 New members were inducted into the NLSA Hall of Fame at a banquet held in conjunction with the annual meeting of the Newfoundland and Labrador Soccer Association at the Battery Hotel in St. John's, Saturday, November 19.
In announcing the 12 new members, Provincial soccer President Doug Redmond cited them as "exceptional soccer people. Their achievements and contributions have been valuable and important to soccer and they will certainly add to the high prestige that the Hall enjoys."
"We are very grateful to the people who took the time to submit nominations and to the selection committee of Jeff Babstock, Gord Dunphy and Angus Barrett for their work on behalf of the Hall. We encourage others to submit nominations of other worthy candidates."
Redmond explained "there were five extra members to consider this year with the 30th anniversary of our Hall of Fame."

Sandy (Faulkner) Ash (Athlete)

Sandy (Faulkner) Ash epitomizes soccer excellence, longevity and the competitive desire to succeed. For almost 25 years she competed at the highest level of women's soccer in Canada. Her exceptional pace, quickness and technical ability created havoc in her opponent's defense area of the field and provided inspiration and motivation for her teammates. During this time she had stints with the Women's National Soccer Team, competing in a CONCACAF Qualifying Competition, competed in a North American Women's Semi-Pro Soccer League, represented her Province at 13 Jubilee Trophy competitions and competed in the Canadian Intercollegiate Athletic Union (CIAU) Championships. During her career, she was a Top Scorer, an MVP and received numerous All-Star selections in Newfoundland and Labrador and in Alberta where she now lives. Her 13 times competing in the Canadian Jubilee Trophy Championships with three gold, one silver and three bronze medals must be close to or a Canadian record

Raeleen (Dunne) Baggs (Athlete)

To summarize an outstanding career in the sport of soccer, one only has to say brilliance and

brains. With a technical ability and a mind to see beyond, Raeleen (Dunne) Baggs stepped beyond the ordinary and into the world of greatness. Throughout her career she recognized that to succeed, you must be physically fit, play with determination and grit and demonstrate an intelligence and understanding that garnishes the respect of both players and coaches. Along the way, she had two invitations to National Team Training Camps, competed in the Canadian National Jubilee Trophy and Canadian Intercollegiate Athlete Union (CIAU) Championships. She was named a CIAU All-Star and a CIAU Academic All-Star, a Provincial and Canadian Universities Player of the Year, and an Athlete of the Year. To recognize her greatness and exceptional ability, the Newfoundland and Labrador Soccer Association has honoured her with two distinctions; the Provincial Jubilee Trophy MVP award is named in her honour and for her play throughout the 1990′s, she was named NLSA Player of the Decade.

Roland "Junior" Doyle (Athlete)

Versatility is one of the keys to being successful. For almost 40 years Roland "Junior" Doyle was able to take on any role or position on the soccer field. From being a goalkeeper, a striker or a playmaker, he was up to the task to fill the need for his team. Although most of his success was with St. Lawrence, he did help CBS with two 2nd Division Provincial Titles in the 1980′s. It was however, his years with his St. Lawrence Laurentians that his overall play stood out. During this time he received individual recognition with scoring titles and MVP awards. As well, he helped St. Lawrence win Burin Peninsula, Provincial Challenge Cup and Atlantic Soccer Championships. He was also part of the St. Lawrence team which won silver medals at the Eastern Canadian and National Challenge Cup Competitions as well as two gold medals at the Eastern Canadian Masters Championships. He is a member of the Burin Peninsula Soccer Hall of Fame and a member of the St. Lawrence team which was named NLSA Team of the Decade for the 1970′s.

Ben Dunne (Builder)

For more than 20 years the growth of women's soccer has steadily increased in numbers and intechnical capability. This ongoing success can be attributed in part to the efforts of Ben Dunne, particularly in the late 1980′s and 1990′s. His efforts at the club level with Mount Pearl minor and later at the provincial team and senior women's level is why female soccer is strong across the province. On the coaching side, he coached teams from Under-8 to Under-18 leading Mount Pearl teams to seven straight provincial championships. As a senior coach, he was head coach of the Newfoundland and Labrador 1993 Women's Canada Games Team and twice coached teams to the Provincial Jubilee Trophy Championship. In addition to his coaching he has worked in many capacities at the executive level to help raise the profile of women's soccer. For his efforts as a builder, he was inducted into the Mount Pearl and St. John's Soccer Halls of Fame and the Mount Pearl Sports Alliance Hall of Fame

Jerry Gallant (Builder)

The strength of soccer in Western Newfoundland, particularly Stephenville, is in part due to the efforts of Jerry Gallant. For over 20 years Jerry worked on behalf of Stephenville and the Western Region in promoting the game of soccer at the local and provincial level. Through his position as president of Stephenville soccer and his time on the Technical Committee of NLSA he stressed the importance of a strong technical background for players and teams if they wished to move forward. This strong belief paid dividends during the mid nineties as he and his Western teams won three straight provincial championships and the right to represent the province at the National Club Championships. His belief in technical development saw him earn the designation of course conductor which allowed him to encourage this belief among the coaches for whom he was responsible for certifying

John Humby (Athlete/Builder)

John Humby has the distinction of playing and officiating at the highest level of soccer in the province for more than 35 years. As a player, he distinguished himself as a wise player while playing for Holy Cross. His pace and ability to provide crisp accurate crosses into the penalty area saw him help lead Holy Cross to a National Bronze Medal, three provincial Challenge Cups and eight St. John's Championships. As an official, he officiated at all levels of play for 25 years. In a word, he was known as "Mr. Dependable". During the days when officials were difficult to obtain, he was always an individual upon whom the league could call to cover a game when they were short of an official. This willingness to always be there and the feel for the game he learned as a player, earned him the respect from both league administrators and players alike. For his contribution to the St. John's League, he was inducted into its Hall of Fame.

Judi Kelloway (Builder)

Judi Kelloway has distinguished herself at all levels of soccer throughout Canada. Her abundance of energy and her specific attention to detail, has seen her serve on, chair and represent Newfoundland and Labrador and the Canadian Soccer Associations on many committees. For the NLSA, she heads up its youth division, rules and regulations and harassment committees. As well, she serves on the CSA's Competitions Committee and represents it at many National Tournaments. Her knowledge of rules, regulations and protocol, often sees her as the focal point of procedure for many events. For her efforts as a leader, she has twice been named NLSA Executive of the Year as well as Sport NL Executive of the Year. For her efforts and outstanding contribution to the game at the provincial and National levels, the Canadian Soccer Association has awarded her its Award of Merit

Sherry Morrissey (Athlete)

Sherry Morrissey was an athlete and an impact player on the soccer field. Although small in stature, she played as big as any player in the women's program. Technically skilled and with speed to go along with competitive desire and toughness, she brought fear to all those she faced on the soccer field. These abilities made her one of the dominant players of the eighties. As a perennial scoring leader, both within her team and in the league, she was known for scoring the big goal. When a game winner or game breaking goal was needed she could be counted on to come through. In the 1980′s she played on three St. John's and three provincial championship teams. She was recognized for her athletic abilities by being named St. John's Female Athlete of the Year. She was the first female player to be inducted into the St. John's Soccer Hall of Fame and she is a member of the Mount Pearl Sports Hall of Fame. The NLSA also honoured her by naming her Female Player of the Decade for the 1980′s.

Dee Murphy (Builder)

For more than 50 years Dee Murphy has served the soccer community either through his

position as a sports writer, television commentator or as a soccer volunteer. Through his many contacts, he has helped promote soccer throughout the province and in the rest of Canada in his role as Public Relations person for the NLSA. Every young player throughout the province who has made a provincial team or has made good on the National scene has had a story or their name mentioned in their local media. This recognition has inspired many young players to seek out their dream goals as soccer players. Through his efforts, the NLSA has established itself as the best when it comes to reporting results on provincial and National Tournaments. In addition to reporting on soccer, Dee has chaired a committee to record the history of soccer in St. John's. He was a member of the NLSA Hall of Fame Committee for 15 years and has coached the Black Horse Women's Soccer Team to three St. John's and two provincial championships.

Keith Storey (Athlete/Builder)

The moment Keith Storey arrived from England in 1971 he immediately made an impact. His robust take charge style of play quickly established him as a leader and one who would influence the game and those around him. Known for his physical presence and style of play, he was recognized for his ability to win the ball in the air and in 50-50 challenges. Although he gave no quarter, his respect for the game and those around him earned him respect from the soccer community. His intelligent and skilful play was quickly recognized, thus earning him the status of perennial all-star. His impact on the game wasn't only as a player. He has served as a director and president of St. John's Youth Soccer, coached at the club and provincial levels and was an advisor to the Feildian Soccer Club. He has won St. John's League Championships and individual MVP and Most Gentlemanly/Spirited Player Awards. He has also been inducted into the St. John's Soccer and St. John's Youth Soccer Halls of Fame

Winston (Winse) Strang (Athlete)

Winse Strang has the distinction of playing for the Lawn Shamrocks for more than 40 years. During that time, he has captured provincial championships at every level of senior competition. The highlight of his career however was in 1987 when at the age of 43, he returned to the senior team and helped them win the provincial Challenge Cup title. Known for his determination, speed and bullet-like shot, he often brought fear to the minds of goalkeepers when he got in close. Recognized for his play, he was often selected to Burin Peninsula All-Star Teams to play against St. John's and St. Pierre. To further indicate the type of player he was, at the age of 49, he was named MVP of the provincial Senior B Championships. For his play on the field, he has been inducted into the Burin Peninsula Soccer Hall of Fame'

Joe Turpin (Athlete)

Joe Turpin has distinguished himself as a team leader at every level which he played. Whether it was for the St. Lawrence Laurentians, the University of New Brunswick team or when he represented his province, he was a force to be reckoned with. Personal achievement and success followed him at every level. He was a key member of the Newfoundland and Labrador U-18 Team which won the National Championship, he twice won National Challenge Cup silver medals as well as being a member of the Province's Canada Games Team. He has won seven provincial Challenge Cup titles, he has been an MVP, a Top Defender and an All-Star at the provincial and university level. In addition, he received a try-out with the National Team. For his outstanding play, he has been inducted into the St. Lawrence and the Burin Peninsula Soccer Halls of Fame.

Marystown wins 4 "A" Soccer Championship

Marystown Clippers defeated Mount Pearl High by a 1-0 score to win the
Provincial 4 "A" High School Championship last weekend. Marystown were coached
by Shannon Brushett and Dwayne Evans. Five teams from across the province
participated in the tournament namely; Mount Pearl High, Holy Spirit from Manuels, Holy Heart from St. John’s and Corner Brook High.

* H.C. - In their final contest, they scored two early goals and maintained that lead

Zack Wade had the best game of his career leading Holy Cross
to a 4-0 shut -out victory over Alberta while scoring two goals.
John Douglas was simply outstanding in the tournament as he registered two shut-outs.

Personally, I would like to throw my hat off to the two men shown above. I think that these two individuals has put NLSA Senior Women's Soccer on the map. Three years ago, when Gerry and Scott got the Kirby Team off the ground, they took a lot of heat for building or going with a so called all -star team. But today, just a mere few years later, our Senior Women's soccer is much improved, both at the provincial and the national level, because of their initiative. Two of the past three year's the NLSA Women's Jubilee final ended in a 1-0 score. While at the National Jubilee Shield Competition we are no longer beaten before the game begins. We now can compete with the best of them and again I will repeat I think that is because of
Gerry Kirby and Scott Betts.

2011 - Holy Cross Will Be Heard From

This is the 3rd consecutive year that this Holy Cross squad will travel to National "Senior Men's" Soccer National Championship and I feel this club are going to be heard from. First of all, they were challenged in 2011 and you can bet that good teams find a way to win, and sometimes it will take a break or two for you to get through. Cross won this by defeating a hard working Feildians team in the semi -finals and winning on a penalty shot shootout after they had relinquished the first goal of the game in OT. They tied the game in the dying minutes of the contest which permitted them to defeat Mount Pearl on PK's.

The pressure is now "off "

Yes, Cross had pressure on them in 2011and they had it on them all season. But now they can build themselves on the character that they obtained by succeeding through this year's pressure. They will also will gain from the experience they got in Saskatoon in 2008 and from the disappointing showing they had in 2009 in PEI.

Soccerstop Edge FC squad from the Sherwood-Parkdale Rangers Soccer Club are again back as the PEI reps and they are the defending Nationals Champions. Last year when Holy Cross met this team in their first game of the tournament they outplayed the PEI reps in every aspect of the game except on the score-sheet. Young Scotty Woodfine could have beaten PEI all by himself if he had scored on any of the three or four break-away's that he had. Also, the missed opportunity, on a wide open net, by Matt Breen in the dying moments of the first half could have impacted the outcome of game as well.

During the match, while I was doing the color for the broadcasting, there was a Senior CSA Referee Assessor, from B.C. standing next to me and he whispered in my ear , "despite what the final outcome is here , Holy Cross could have very easily put the PEI team away if they had scored on half of their chances". I feel PEI got all the breaks in 2010. The situation may be very different this time around in 2011. This time, I look for a Cross victory : Score 2-1

The Juventus team trailed the 1st place Sons of Italy team and the Hellas FC soccer team all season but won the big one this season. Both all -star players, Justin Pickford and Jon Hawco , led their team to victories in the Molson Challenge Cup Semi - Final action on Friday at KGV soccer field.

Game 1- Holy Cross vs Feildians

In the Holy Cross/Feildians game it was a stubborn, hard working and determined Feildians team that took the 1st place Holy Cross team for everything that they were worth and then some. However, it was league leading goal scorer, Jon Hawco, that scored the games only goal of the contest at the 70 minute mark that will give Holy Cross the chance to win their third consecutive Provincial Challenge Cup on Sunday.

Game 2- Mount Pearl vs St.Lawrence

Justin Pickford may have had a sort of , comeback player of the year season , but in actuality he may have saved his best of the season for the play-offs. He scored two highlight goals as he led his Mount Pearl team over the Laurentians in seni-final play. Pickford's first goal came rather early, at the 13th minute mark. But the Laurentians rebounded with a solid 2nd half and it was young Sean Edwards denting the twine for the Laurentians at the 55 minute mark. However, it would take double over-time before this contest would be decided. Kevin Oram scored Mount Pearl's 1st overtime goal at the 107 minute mark and Pickford put the final nail into the Laurentians scoring one of the most beautiful goals, that I've ever witnessed, at the 109 minute mark.

Both underdogs came to play

There is no doubt in my mind that the best two teams came through in their semi -final game and the Championship final on Sunday should be a classic with Holy Cross and Mount Pearl going head to head. However, both the Feildians and St. Lawrence, who were certainly the underdogs in their game, got a lot to be proud off. The Feildians put in one of the hardest working efforts of all times. They really put themselves in a position to pull one of the greatest upsets of all times. While the Laurentians who were faced with a number of player setbacks early in this season, regrouped, rebuilt and managed a 3rd place finish on the season. Then in the play-offs they took a great soccer team, Mount Pearl, to OT before the game was decided. They also put themselves in a position to clinch victory in their semi-final game. Both St.Lawrence and the Feildians must look to the future but for the remainder of 2011 they should go around with their head held high for their overall performance in 2011.

Tyler Forsey – A kid with a bright future

In July, Fortune native Tyler Forsey, 18, accompanied by his father, Walt, went on a soccer player’s trip-of-a-lifetime when he travelled to eastern Germany to attend two pre-season soccer training camps.

Forsey’s first week was in Cottbus where he trained with the under-19 FC Energie Cottbus squad, which competes in the German first division league.

Upon arrival at the field, he met with the coach who is a 20-year veteran of German first division soccer and was informed that he would initially be taking part in an inter-squad game.

Forsey said he was told up front that if he couldn't play at this level, he would have to train elsewhere. He was very impressive in that first outing, scoring both goals to lead his side to a 2-1 victory. The coach liked what he saw. After the match, he told Forsey to hang up his cleats in the change room and to pick them up the same time the next day – a tradition in Germany.

The coach, who expressed much excitement about him, said he was the fastest player on the field, described his one-on-one as excellent and was surprised to see that he was equally strong with both feet. His only negative comment was he would like for him improve his level of physical fitness.

While in Cottbus, Forsey indicated he trained six hours a day. Last year, two players from the USA’s under-18 squad practised with the same team but did not make it past the second day. He said he was most impressed with the fast pace of play and the one-touch passing ability of the midfielders.

For the second week, Forsey practiced with the Dresden Dynamos under-19 team.

In Dresden, the games and practices were very intense, with players coming from all over Europe. When Germany won the gold in soccer at the 1976 Olympics, six players from the national team had originally played with the Dynamos.

Forsey explained each session in Dresden brought a new experience for him. He would see players being dropped, and in some case, more were added on a daily basis.

Again he got off to a good start that week and scored the winning goal in a 2-1 decision in his first inter-squad game. There was absolutely no time for playing around. Forsey said he witnessed two players from Hungary being told to leave with only 20 minutes left in the practice.

He survived the vigorous training and remained there for the full week. During his last practice, his side lost 2-1, but he once again scored for his squad.

The session ended with fitness testing that culminated four by four minute sprints with three minute intervals between each sprint. During the last sprint, Forsey indicated he took off out in front of the rest of the team and finished 20 meters ahead of his next teammate. The players all ran over to congratulate him for his acceleration and finish. Dresden’s coach was apparently very interested in him.

Forsey said the experience has now made him come to the realization that he can play at the highest echelon. He said he knows it will take a lot of hard work and dedication in order to perform to the best of his ability at the top level.

He noted it was a culture shock to him to find out these young players live and train with the teams all year around and only get to go home twice per year for 10 days each time. They also attend school inside the gated area, sleeping and eating there as well.

FORSEY’S FUTURE

I have watched Forsey play soccer for the past two seasons with Mount Pearl’s Under-18 and Challenge Cup teams.

Personally, I feel he has a lot of raw talent. Right now, while I don’t necessarily think he is the number one striker in our province, I do feel he is the most dangerous.

I also realize that there are some areas of the game and certain skills that he needs to polish up. However, it is his blistering speed and ability to hit the ball with both feet that virtually makes him a threat every time he touches the ball in the offensive zone.

As I have previously said and I recently heard Clarence Senior acknowledge at a game in St. Lawrence, young players must be put on the field and play in order for them to develop and progress.

Actually, if Forsey was on my team, he would be a 90 minute, fulltime player.

Unfortunately, fans on the Labour Day weekend won’t get to see him play in the Challenge Cup Play-offs this year because he recently led the Mount Pearl Under -18s to an upset victory over St. John’s in the provincial ‘A’ championships.

Under the current Canadian Soccer Association rules, he is ineligible to play in a second tournament that leads to a national championship.

Scoring the team’s only goal in a 1-0 victory, It was no coincidence Forsey was named Mount Pearl’s MVP in the provincial championship game.

Dunphy’s Details: The 2011 Provincial Challenge Cup Play-offs should be very interesting. Gone is the old page play-off format where there was a second life for the first versus second place teams. Instead, you will see the first place Holy Cross play the fourth place Feildians and second place Mount Pearl go against the third place St. Lawrence Laurentians this Friday evening. The winners meet to decide the Challenge Cup champion Sunday afternoon.

Thomas Pioroway - A young goalie with great potential

I've seen this 15 year old kid play goal with the CB Auto Strikers on August 18 against
Holy Cross and he totally amazed me. Although, Cross won the game 2-1 the kid put in a solid performance. After the match, I had a brief chat with the young fella and encouraged him to keep with it. He has all the tools to be a great keeper.He has the height - 6'4', the athleticism and is technically sound for a minor keeper.Should Thomas Pioroway continue with his development he very well could make a lot noise on the provincial scene and CBS will be heard from.

The Final Four are set

Well, the final four are decided for the Molson Challenge Cup Labor-day Play-offs. It will be the Holy Cross playing the Feildians and the Laurentians playing Mount Pearl.

Sunday's action

In the first contest on Sunday at 2 PM, the CB Auto Strikers FC team pounded the Laurentians by a 4-0 score. Ryan Sheppard, led the CBS team with two goals. While, Corey Mullett and Chris White added singles and Chris Hayes recorded the shut-out. This contest was the last game of the season and the victory moved CBS into 4th position but their celebrations would only last for a few hours. This contest was followed up by a Feildians and Mount Pearl match in Mount Pearl. The Feildians required a total of three points in their two remaining games to move ahead of the CBS squad to clinch the 4th and final play-off spot. They wasted no time in doing this, that's exactly what they did in this match. They defeated a somewhat depleted Mount Pearl lineup, who were resting some key players that were in card trouble, by a 2-1 final score. For the second consecutive game Jay Babstock was the hero for the Feildians. He netted his, third of the weekend, and 10th of the season at the 69 minute mark after Rudy Norman had tied the game for Mount Pearl after David Hickey had scored the opener.

Jay Babstock scored two goals as he led the Feildians to a 2-0 victory over St. Lawrence Laurentians in Challenge Cup action played at KGV on Saturday. Babstock is now currently tied for third place in the Challenge Cup goal scoring race with 9 goals. Jay scored his opening goal at the 3 minute mark on a penalty shot and his second goal came 31 minutes

Laurentians were very flat

The Laurentians came out in the contest flat and the Feildians early goal even deflated the Laurentians from getting into the contest, that much more. The Laurentians have clinched 3rd place in the standings and lacked any form of emotion or desire throughout the contest. However, the Feildians on the other hand were all over the Laurentians and by virtue of the victory and the three points they got for the win have moved into the 4th and final play-off position. They are presently one point ahead of CBS.

Today's matches

The Laurentians will be in CBS today to take on the CB Auto Strikers FC team at 2: 30. While the Feildians will entertain Mount Pearl at the Smallwood pitch at 4:30.

Saturdays other action

In other Challenge Cup action on Saturday the leagues top two teams went at in war like fashion at the KGV pitch. Both teams played well, both team had their moments and in the end it was a scoreless draw. Should be a very interesting Labour day Week-end play-off tournament.

Holy Cross and St. Lawrence split weekend series

St. Lawrence - 2 vs Holy Cross - 0

On Sunday, the St.Lawrence Laurentians came up with what can be described as the greatest upset in NL soccer thus far in 2011. The 3rd place Laurentians, who at times this year appears totally unorganized with their system of play, upended the heavily favoured 1st place Holy Cross team. The Laurentians are in a rebuilding stage. However, it was the Laurentians changing of their system of play, plus the maneuvering of some of their key players, that created the upset. Laurentians coach, Jim Loder got away from his 2011 three players defensive unit and instead went with the traditional four backs, pairing up Clinton Edwards and Marc Pittman in the center back position. In fact the old system worked what I would call, " A Laurentian miracle." This was followed up by veteran Andrew Perrott being positioned into the center mid -field position . Next, came what I would say was the most crucial move. The Laurentians, who have struggled all season looking for a bonafide striker, started young Sean Edwards in the striking position. Edwards answered the call with flying colors. He got himself into the game early, challenging for the 50/50 balls while giving out and taking a few good old knocks. He scored a beauty at the 19 minute mark on a volley, and in the second half, he outran and out skilled the Holy Cross fullbacks as he scored his second of the game at the 65 minute.

Both teams learned a lesson

There is no doubt that both teams will benefit from this match. Cross, who are certainly the team to beat this season, have to realize that it is never a given that you are going to win. While the Laurentians must realize they must play and work a system that benefits your players.

Holy Cross continued their winning ways on Saturday as they walked into St.Lawrence and dominated the Laurentians in nearly every aspect of the game, winning their 16th straight game of the season. St.Lawrence did have a few moments in the first 20-25 minutes of the game but that would be it. Holy Cross rookie Michael Brushett, scored at the 36 and 40 minute mark while Colin Doyle posted the shut-out.

Leisure activities: Right now, I love spending as much time as I possibly can with my wife Karen and my son Quinn who’s 18 months old. They are the most important things in my life.

Earliest memories of playing soccer: My earliest memory playing soccer was in the kitchen of my Nan Norman’s house when I was three or four. I remember my Uncle Junior (John Norman) rolling me the ball, and I would kick it hard as I could, trying to land it in the kitchen sink, which my Nan had filled with dish detergent bubbles. Nan was none too pleased when the bubbles and soap splashed everywhere.

Players you looked up to growing up in St. Lawrence: ‘Looked up to’ may not do it justice. ‘Idolized’ is probably a better word. When I was playing minor soccer, there were so many great players playing Challenge Cup with St. Lawrence, but in particular Harry Kelly, Dr. Paul Slaney, Bob Spearns and Scott Bishop. These guys are legends of soccer to me, and as a minor player in St. Lawrence, I wished and dreamed I could be like them.

Top three players you played with: Clinton Edwards - the best overall player I played with. Not only can he play any position, but he is the best player on the field in that position when he plays. Richard Kelly - the best goal scorer probably in the history of NL soccer. Blair Aylward - one of the best right backs to play the game. Blair had the heart of a champion.

Top three players you played against: Derek Strang - by far one of the fittest, ferocious and most intelligent players I played against. I don't know if I was more glad when he decided to join the Laurentians or relieved I didn’t have to mark him anymore. Shane Antle - one of the best center midfielders I ever played against. Tom Dunderdale - a former Burin Eagle and Fieldian, Tom was a big, strong, powerful center back.

Most memorable soccer goal: The 2002 Challenge Cup final goal to beat Holy Cross in overtime. This goal gave us the 2002 Challenge Cup, but more importantly, it gave us the right to be NL's host team at the Nationals in St. John's that same year.

Greatest soccer moment: Winning the bronze medal in 2007 in Halifax. Our only loss at that National was to the Calgary Callies in the opening game. We then riddled off four straight wins, including having to play three games within 30 hours. Anyone who played the game knows how hard that is, but to do it at the Nationals and win all three was an amazing accomplishment by our team.

Most painful soccer moment: Losing the National gold medal championship game in 2002 in St. Johns in overtime 1-0. That was the most disappointing moment of my life to date, not alone in soccer.

Most treasured soccer award: As an individual, the ‘Player of the Decade’ award for 2000-2009, but my most treasured awards are the 12 Challenge Cups I have won with the St. Lawrence Laurentians.

Influential coaches you have had: I have been really lucky to have great coaches. Jack Simms and Jerome Slaney were very important coaches for me in minor soccer. They taught me the basics that are so important. Derek Strang, who kind of reinvented me as a player and moved me from a striker to center midfielder. Yourself, Gord, who showed me to play with heart and determination. But the most influential coach was Clem Jr. Edwards. Edwards has coached me more years than anyone. He gave me my first call up to Challenge Cup when I was 17, and I owe a great deal to him, not only for the player I am but the person I am today.

Closest soccer friend: Without a doubt, Andrew Perrot. We have played soccer together since we were four years old. He is one of the best and toughest players I have played with and has an enormous amount of heart, something you can’t teach a player to have. I always knew when Andrew was on the field I had a teammate that would go to hell and back for me and ask nothing in return.

I will ask you a question that may be very difficult for you to answer, but it is a question that soccer fans throughout Newfoundland, and in particular Laurentian soccer fans, really would like to know. Why switch to Mount Pearl at this stage of your career?

Gord, the decision I made this year to play with Mount Pearl was one of the hardest decisions I ever had to make in my life. I feel, at the age of 35-years-old, that my immediate family is now the number one thing in my life. It is no longer soccer. Soccer is now number two. However, I also felt I would like to carry on and play soccer at the highest level for a few more years. Playing with Mount Pearl has allowed me to spend much time during the summer with my wife and son. It also has permitted me to train regularly, which I feel is crucial at this stage of my career. Playing in Mount Pearl has allowed me to still play the game I love. I treasure the 16 years of soccer I played in St. Lawrence. I will always hold my friends, former teammates and the fans of St. Lawrence with the utmost respect. I will always be a Laurentian by heart

This game very well could decide the 4th and final play-off position for Labor Day Week-end. To-date both teams have played 14 games and each team has 6 games remaining. Currently, the Feildians are 1 point up on CBS. CBS opened the season appearing to be very strong but their play has dwindled as of late. While the Feildians started slowly but have changed things around as the season progressed.

Should be interesting !

Quite a different scenario will exist with this contest. Holy Cross, the 2011 favorites are presently undefeated and are definitely the team to beat this season. Actually, Cross are a very good team. However, Mount Pearl are a much improved team and are certainly talented enough to challenge Holy Cross and even pull an upset. They are also a very good team. This is must see game that I highlighted on the schedule some time ago. This game will be a good measure for both teams. It could even be a preview match of things to come later this year.

Should be another interesting contest !

Dunn leads Holy Cross to another victory

Rookie scoring sensation Mike Dunn scored Holy Cross's only goal to lead, an undefeated, Holy Cross team to a very hard fought 1-0 victory over C.B.S. Holy Cross came out in the 1st half, with all guns ablaze, had three early chances and at the 22 mark Mike Dunn struck the ball, showing his athleticism, while scoring on a beautiful shot. This was Dunn's 6th goal of the season and he leads all rookies in the goal scoring department. After the goal Holy Cross slacked off and C.B.S. dug in and they took it to the Holy Cross team. C.B.S. moved the ball, working the middle of the field. As a result of their efforts and ball movement they were constantly penetrating the Holy Cross back line. Actually, C.B.S. were very unfortunate not to have gained a point or even a victory in this match. However, the confidence that C.B.S. gained from this contest may be something that they will use in the second half of the season.

Feildian's defeat U-18's

In an earlier match, also played at KGV, the Feildians defeated the winless St. John's U-18 by a 1-0 score. Tyler Winsor scored Feildians lone goal while David Hickey registered the shut-out. To-date the St. john's U-18, who are playing in the Challenge Cup League on an exhibition basics, are winless in 12 games, have scored only 4 goals while they have allowed 45 .

St. Lawrence Laurentian's lose a great fan - John Kelly

One of the longest and greatest fans that the St. Lawrence Laurentians ever had, John Kelly has passed away. Not only was John and Nellie Kelly good fans there were good people. I can remember when my four brothers and I were growing up in St.Lawrence and playing soccer John and Nellie Kelly would attend every game : U-12, U-14, U-16 and high school. They also would travel wherever the Senior Laurentians traveled and played anywhere in the province. Every Sunday morning I would see them at mass and both of them would be wearing a big smile. John lived to be the ripe old age of 89 years old.

God Bless You Nellie and R.I.P. John
