St. Lawrence vs Holy Cross

GORD CAST / FORE CAST : Not a lot of differences to choose from in this contest. In goal we have Holy Cross's Thomas Pieroway and the Laurentians John Douglas, the leagues top two goalies. However I would give a very marginal edge in 2017 to Pieroway. On defense, St. Lawrence are dominant, holding the leagues stingiest goals against with 12 goals in 23 games. Marc Pittman has been the Laurentians best defender. He has been complimented in the middle by newcomer George Lawton or now Alberta resident Clinton Edwards. I'm not so sure on Lawton's status due to citizenship issues; either way Clinton or Lawton, its a can't miss situation for St. Lawrence. The other two starters will be Shane Perrott and Daniel Crew. Holy Cross defense, led by all -stars Alex Pretty and Jeff Slaney, have had a great season but finding two other complimentary mates this season has been troublesome at times for Holy Cross. However, I do expect Sean Henderson and Andre Stanford to be their starters on Friday. The addition of Harry Carter from the NL Canada Games team will be a welcome addition to this position.. In mid-field, both teams could have game changers playing in this position. St. Lawrence's Jordi Slaney and Holy Cross's Owen McCleese are two of the best in the league and whoever dominates here could give their team a huge advantage. Laurentian's newcomer Marc Brefo has become one of my favorites but so is Mike Dunn of Holy Cross, both are skilfull and add a high level of physicality to their game which I love. Meanwhile, I give Dunn a solid edge in the goal-scoring department. I would have to think, should St, Lawrence add Sean Drew in the middle, this would give the Laurentians a huge edge. Drew knows where the net is. Up front Holy Cross are superior all the way. Jake Warren whom I expect is a MVP finalist, is the most complete player in the league. His partner, Tyler Kirby has made a name for himself this season, he is skillful and can find the back of the net. It's their quickness that mystifies their opponents. The addition of Jacob Grant will further solidify Cross's attack should they decide go with three strikers or use Warren as a win midfielder. If St. Lawrence lacks in one position, it's offensively. Laurentian's haven't had the one prolific goalscorer in 2017. Stefan Slaney has had an injury plagued season, while junior age player Brent Hennebury, who stole the show in 2016, does show glimpses of a good goalscorer, one shouldn't expect him to lead the way again in 2017. The area of goal-scoring has got to be a major area of concern for the Laurentians Finally, I'm sure you all may want me to say who I feel the winner of this 1vs 2 match is going to be? Well, I decided to flip a coin and it landed in favor of the Laurentians but hold on now , this game could go to overtime or even penalty shots. Still, I narrowly favor St. Lawrence by one goal based on their overall defensive structure.

Mount Pearl vs Feildians

I'm not expecting this contest to be quite as close as the game one contest but who knows? In goal , I put Mount Pearl's Brandon Noseworthy and Feildians Braedan Sheppard on an even keel with each other. This season both of these experienced keepers have proven that they have arrived and are big-league stoppers. Actually, both have the ability to be a game- changer. On defense , it's Mount Pearl with the advantage all the way. Kevin Oram has had another all-star season. During the season he has been complimented with Matthew Hamyln and Andrew Murphy, both of whom are all-stars in their own right. The addition of newcomer Mike O'Brien has helped and now with Riley Bennett from the Canada Games, this could further strengthen the back-line. Then Mount Pearl also has Matthew Lahey and Brandon Coombs. The Feildians defense who are led by captain Greg Reid, who is one of the leagues best center-backs, will compete for the leagues best defender. The club hasn't really had a consistency of fullbacks in the back-end of the pitch throughout the regular season. However, I do like how Bobby Gamba ,Simon Pope and Dylan Jenkins have picked it up and have looked more comfortable as the season went along. One's got to realize defense is where championship teams are built from. In midfield there is no decisive winner between Mount Pearl and Feildians. Feildians may have a marginal edge with; Tyler Windsor, Carter Mackey, Ben Collingwood , Taylor Smith and Canada Games player Felly Elando. However, should Mount Pearl move Matthew Hamyln into mid-field the advantage would swing in their favor. Mark Reddy has had another solid season and so has Ryan Thistle. Up front there is no doubt the winner is Mount Pearl led by Tyler Forsey, who is my choice for the league MVP. Tyler is the best sniper in the league and he himself is capable of winning a championship. His 21 goals this season gave him more than half of his teams total goal production, His partners Ronaldo Morris and Scott Woodfine allow Mount Pearl to form a dynamic trio with Woodfine being the leagues best set-up man. Feildians who depended on Aaron Buckingham, Zach Hynes and Marek Nakonieczky for goals this season, no doubth will have increased in scoring punch with the late additions of Iiam Gamba and Emmanuel Dolo but will it be enough to put the Double Blues over the top? I'm not so sure, Feildians have not only have to prove to everyone they can win the big game they need to prove it to themselves. In concluding my assessment on Game 2, I feel it will be the experience and veteran leadership of Mount Pearl that will give them a victory. Furthermore, I predict Mount Pearl will defeat the loser of Game 1 and advance to the 2017 Championship. They very well may be this years dark-horse team.

While now all the focus is centered on the final four, I would like to thank CBS Strikers FC team and Corner Brook United on making the Molson Challenge Cup league a true Provincial League. CBS Strikers are the leagues "Most Improved Team" while it is Corner Brook United who showed character in making five weekend road trips compared two for all others. It had to be extremely difficult for Western to travel knowing full well that they were out of the play-off contention in mid-season. I think it was CBS who showed the league that a team can turn around it's fortunes in one season.

On behalf of all of Newfoundland and Labrador Soccer, I want to express sincere condolences to the family on the passing of Keith Walsh Sr. On August 1st, Keith after a very courageous battle with cancer, passed away in St. Lawrence. Going back to the days in the 60's when I first became addicted to soccer I can remember Keith on the St. Lawrence Laurentian team that won the 1st Newfoundland Challenge Cup which went on to represent St.Lawrence at the Nationals in Toronto in 1967. Keith was a diminutive player but played with heart. He was fearless on the field and I will say he didn't mind mixing it up. I can vividly recall Gerald "Moose" Fitzpatrick being his partner in crime on the field. When ever Keith was there getting involved in some extra -curricula activity, Moose was there. They were buddies on and off the field. Not only was Keith heart on the field, he was all heart to his family and to the entire community of St. Lawrence. Keith Walsh was inducted into the St. Lawrence Hall of Fame in 1991.

In the middle- third of the field there is no doubt Jordi Slaney is the Laurentians main man but I have to add I like this Mark Brefo guy. He is a good solid quality player. This guy has strength and power, with a sort of polite mean streak in him. He may even assist you back on to your feet while just after bolting you over.

There's work to be done

At this time I don't feel everything is all good in the Laurentian camp. I do feel the Laurentians have a few concerns to address. Number one priority, will Laurentians ace goal-keeper John Douglas be in top form come play-off time? I'll be the first one to admit that John Douglas won the 25th Challenge Cup in 2016 for the Laurentians with his heroics he performed against Holy Cross in the semi-final contest. However in 2017, John has spent a lot of his energy with the NL Games team as an assistant coach. The time has now arrived for John to steer the Laurentians ship in preparation for Labor Day Weekend Play-offs. Then there's got to be another concern for coach Derek Strang and Dr. Paul Slaney, it's the Laurentians lack of goal-scoring. The 2016 "Wils Molloy Golden Boot Award" winner ,Stefan Slaney has struggled in 2017 to find the back of the net. I see the Laurentians are now experimenting with putting Clinton Edwards up front to see what fortunes he will have in the offensive third of the field.... should be interesting.

Home Field Advantage

The Laurentians have eight games remaining to the regular season and strangely enough they are all at home. The Laurentians opened the season playing during the months of May and June mostly on the road and now comes the home field advantage. This coming weekend the Feildians are visitors to the mining town. Over the years the Feildians can be troublesome to the Laurentians but the Feildians as of late are collapsing like the ice-bergs off Newfoundland shores. With what was once looking like a very promising season for the Feildians in 2017, is now all of a sudden in a tailspin. The Double Blue series will be followed by a July 29/30 series when Corner Brook United makes their annual visit to the Burin
Peninsula. This series should allow the Laurentians to use some of their youth and allow rest to their
injured players but one must never take their opponent for granted. The following weekend of August 6 and Aug 7, the Big Red Machine visits the Soccer Capital on St. Lawrence Day which begins the start of the 2017 St. Lawrence Homecoming. There is no love lost between these two teams but one must realize there is a lot of respect between these two arch-rivals. I would promote the Laurentian vs Holy Cross series as a "can't miss series". Finally the Laurentians will play CBS in their final two outings of the regular season. CBS could very well give the Laurentians a good challenge at home. After all the Laurentians only defeated CBS 1-0 on a PK in their first match of the season and then the two squads played to a scoreless draw in their second contest played at Topsail Field. CBS are the most improved team in the league this year and are capable of pulling an upset.

After looking at Roger Slaney's screen shot of my GORD CAST live-streaming of the Mount Pearl v St. Lawrence Laurentians contest on July 16 - 2017, I have to say, "I was quiet impressed". Hooking the streamline from your computer or ipad into your TV has got to be the way to go. Roger said, " What better way to spend an afternoon if you can't attend the game than to watch it live- streamed? He goes on to say that my brothers who are living in Ontario and Alberta are also tuning in. Roger Slaney currently lives in Nova Scotia and takes in every GORD CAST that he's able and his photo illustrates the best way to have it done. Well done Roger and thanks for sharing your photo and enjoy the casts.

Have you ever tried to write while you are holding your
emotions about a lifelong friend who has just lost his battle for life because
of cancer? I can honestly say folks, “It’s not easy”. I’ve know Al Slaney my
entire life. I went to school with him as a young boy. I played soccer with Al
when he first started playing as a center-back in the days of Pee-Wee and Bantam.
I personally fought with Al when we
played meadow ball. He was the guy on the Slaney’s Lane team and I was the mancho
guy on the Bottom team. Although somewhere
along the way I went ahead of Al in school, I believe it was because he didn’t
pass a religion course. Maybe it was because on a Sunday mornings, Al would say,”Make
sure you bring me or my brother Jed out a church bulletin so Mom would think we
attended Sunday Mass. Yes, he was a
young devil-skin but a very nice guy who had the personality that would want
the boys to drink with him and there was that certain element about him that would
charm the other gender. However, when it came to sports or any type of competition,
soccer, basketball or floor hockey, Al
was one of was the best. Even when there was a game where you would play with
numbers, he was simply outstanding. After Al finished up at the minor level he
then went on to play high school and divisional soccer where he took to the net,
and that’s where he super excelled. He had great hands and super co-ordination.
I feel because of Al’s super level of intelligence he became the first goalie
in Newfoundland that would be the teams general. He directed and controlled the
game as had never been witnessed in the history of Newfoundland soccer. He went
on to become a brilliant goalie, being named regularly to Newfoundland All-Star
Teams and eventually received a try-out with the Canadian National Team. He was the goalie that directed Newfoundland
to a 1974 National Under -18 Championship and became the #1 goalie for the NL
Canada Games team in ‘77. During the 70’s Al directed the Laurentians to two
National Challenge Cup Silver Medals and he was instrumental in the Laurentians
being named ‘70’s – Team of the Decade. He is a member of the SLSA, BPSA and
NLSA Hall of Fames. Three years ago the NLSA named the All-Star goalie award the
“Al Slaney Award” and sadly today it
will now be recognized as the “Al Slaney Memorial Award”.

Today, there is a sombre feeling in the town of St.
Lawrence. For the past three weeks the community has been dealing with the
emotions surrounding the Cortney Lake “Missing Person” file and now to be dealt
another blow with the passing of a soccer legend... it’s not easy. Today, I reached out to some Laurentians along
with a few others and got them to express their feelings about Al’s passing.

Hubert Beck: Current
President of St. Lawrence Soccer Association: Our soccer family in St.
Lawrence are hurting today. How can anyone in NL discuss soccer goaltenders and
not bring up the name Al Slaney? He gave Laurentian fans lots to cheer about
over his career between the posts. He was the best at stopping shots, before
they were ever taken, by acting as a sweeper and taking away potential threats.
He turned goaltending into an art. He
often spoke of his love for family, and his friends were important to him. He gave
a new meaning to “that guy can light up a room ". Stories of Al's
goal-tending skills and friendship will be told for many, many years to come.
RIP Big Guy!

Len Slaney: Former Executive Member
of SLSA: The St. Lawrence Laurentians and the Newfoundland and Labrador Soccer
Association are mourning the loss of the greatest goalie in their history - Al
Slaney. When I coached Al in Minor Soccer, he was such a versatile player
that he excelled at every position he played. During a provincial minor
tournament, Al was force to play in goal. The rest is history. From the early
1970's Al was spectacular in goal for Provincial All-Star teams, Canada Games
teams and his beloved St. Lawrence Laurentians. His acrobatic body movement,
his leadership and his skill set for a goal keeper along with his many
accomplishments are the reasons why Al is a member of three soccer Halls of
Fame - The St. Lawrence Laurentians, the Burin Peninsula Soccer Association and
the Newfoundland and Labrador Soccer Association. Sue and I offer our
deepest condolences and prayers to Al's immediate family, his extended family
and also to his soccer fraternity. May he rest-in-peace. God bless!
bleachers at the Centennial Field in St Lawrence, I was asked, ‘’Who was the
best goalie you have ever seen play in Newfoundland soccer?” I responded, “Without any doubt & without
anyone else being close, it was Al Slaney”! On numerous occasions in the past
number of years, I overheard fans and former soccer players throughout the
province compare other goalies to Al, “He was that good”! Al Slaney as a goalie was aggressive, cool
under pressure, very much a team player, had a very calming effect on his
team-mates, controlled the entire backend of the field, was respected by his
opponents, and had incredible athletic ability. Al was and still is one of the
most recognizable soccer players in NL. He was a great and trustworthy
team-mate and a great trustworthy friend and a soccer icon! Al Slaney’s family,
St Lawrence Soccer and NL soccer just lost one of the BEST!

in all other sports. To me, he was the best soccer goalie in the
province. He once told me, "Wils, you score the goals, and I'll stop
them".. that I never forgot. He was as a guy who simply wanted to win....losing
was not part of his game. As a player he showed us courage, strength and
motivation. His communication to our back line made myself and Keith
better players. He was a man who enjoyed life and took full advantage of
it. He had a lot of kindness in him, and would give you the shirt off his
back. He enjoyed life to the fullest and will be surely missed by his

the greatest goalie Newfoundland has ever produced. The fans adored him
and he was respected by his teammates and opponents alike. He was always the
life of the party and I don't think I ever remember seeing him without that
smile. He was the most agile goalie I've seen and could always be counted on to
make that big save. Our 70's team knew that, most times, all we had to do
was score one goal and Al would handle the rest. He loved life, was a great
friend and will always be remembered as one of the greatest Laurentians of all

natural born athlete. One of the first keepers to act as a sweeper behind the
two center backs, fearless, great in the air and on the ground. He was a true
gentleman on and off the field. He was so kind, good humored, respected by
teammates and opponents. Always there for a good time, many road trips with
fond memories. Laurentians will remember Al Slaney as one of a kind, a great
soccer keeper who had a true love for his family and friends. Rest in peace my

of playing with Al most of my soccer career and like most of his teammates we
can also call him our friend. He was a leader on and off the field. Not taking
anything away from soccer players before or after Al's playing career, I still
consider him to be one of the most accomplished soccer players that this
Province has ever produced. I want to pass on sincere condolences to Beth,
Julie, his sisters, brothers and friends.

put - the best goaltender the sport of

Johnny Breen : Holy Cross Icon : I’m <span style="font-family: "arial" , "sans-serif";">very sorry to hear of Al Slaney’s
passing. AL was a great guy. I was fortunate to play with him on the provincial
team. And I'll always treasure when we played against each other as there was a

I've known. My thoughts are with his family.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "sans-serif";">Phonce Cooper : Al's Team -mate : No question this week St. Lawrence, and our 1970s soccer team, lost a soccer icon and a true friend. Al Slaney’s soccer talent will be difficult to match in today amateur soccer world. Al came into the soccer system when NL and St. Lawrence was switching from the small soccer fields and to the grassy, long, wide fields. The strategy to win games went from slog and run, to individual ball control and team passing, what we referred to in those days as playing “ground ball”. To play this game required a great deal of discipline and personal soccer skills. It required every person on the field to know his/her role. Al, as our goalie, was always there to support his team-mates. As a backline player from the Team-of-the ‘70s, my admiration for Al was particularly his ability to be so cool in difficult situations and always be there to lend support when the going got rough and tough. He never over reacted and he never, ever, bad-mouthed his team-mates. He played the 18-yard line better than any goalie I have ever seen and was continuously making calls, such as: “Cooper/Wils/Smoker/Jimmy/etc, I GOT YOUR BACK”. You never had to look behind. It was a given, Al was there, and, an individual like myself, who was not the most skilful player on the field, but played with my heart, always appreciated I had one of the most respected and skilful goalies in the game who, “had my back”. For that I had the most respect for this individual and I told him so many time during a beer in my shed over the many years after our soccer careers ended. Al Slaney never ever forgot his soccer friends. One person who was special to him, and I think he would want me to mention him in this situation, is his special buddy, and another St. Lawrence soccer icon like himself, who happens to be struggling with his own health issues these days, Known to Al as “Doyle” Junior Doyle. Al would never come to St. Lawrence without making sure he spent an evening with “Doyle”. If there is a better place, there is no doubt Al is doing his best to ensure “he has Doyle’s back”. To Al’s wife , Beth and his daughter, Julie, on behalf of Jean and I, our family, and especially our Team of the Decade 1970s, and his many friends in St. Lawrence and NL, I would like to offer you our sincere condolences. Losing a love-one is unthinkably sad but hopefully you can find some comfort knowing that the one you loved was also loved by those near and far, especially his former soccer buddies. Al will be missed dearly. Rest in peace buddy! It ironic but we all feel as little better today knowing “you have our backs”. God Bless!

The 2017 NLSA Male Canada Games Team Are Solid

To have a successful soccer team, I personally feel you need the right guys behind the bench. No longer do I feel this is a one man job, it's a job for a good three-some. The NLSA have done a superb job in it's selection of coaches for the NLSA 2017 Male Canada Games Team. First I'll start with Andrew Murphy who is the team's head coach. He has been a Challenge Cup All-Star for the past decade. Andrew knows the game very well. He also has been selected as NLSA Challenge Cup All-Star Coach while playing with the Mount Pearl Sr. Men's team. Although he is rather reserved, he still brings a professional like direction to this youth team. Next comes my brother Shane who is an assistant coach with the team. Shane has spent a life time around the game, starting with his minor days as an all-star goalie. He followed up as a very good midfield player in his senior playing days. His thirty years of coaching, starting at the minor 4A high school level, has been nothing but fabulous, he's a proven winner. His four 4-A High School championships alone can attest for this. This, combined with his BPSA and NLSA All-Star coaching years have given him a wealth of knowledge of coaching the game. Next we have John Douglas, the St. Lawrence Laurentians star goalie and a future Hall of Famer. I always felt that goal-tending was an area in which the NLSA needed more development. For me to see John Douglas perform this role , I say kudos to him and to the NLSA. I would also like to acknowledge the team's manager Ganzo Bennett. He has great organizational skills and is a perfectionist. Probably those are some of the reasons Gonzo Bennett has been named as a former Executive of the Year in NL hockey.

A Look at the Games Players

Overall I look at this team as a "group who plays as a team" rather than a team of individual all-stars. Although there are players on this team who do have some superb individual talent. The Games Team are solid in goal. Both keepers, Hawco and Hayward, have good size and are capable of making a great save. The key for both of these two goalies are to remain focused at all times. The NLSA Games Team have a great defense. Riley Bennett, the teams center back is the shining of this group. I feel he is the teams leader on the field. His partner, Jono Quirke, and wing-backs Harry Carter, Matt Crewe, David Goulding and Tomas Osmond are capable of complimenting Bennett nicely. The key for these players will be the support they show for each other while defending. The teams mid-field which consist of Felly Elando, Ryan Dunphy, Gary McKewon, Caesar Figuero, Jonathan Leckie, Eric Knight and Evan Knight are skillful with good vision but I feel there is a need for a greater physical presence here. The players need to use their bodies more. This is the area of the field where the game can be won or lost. I would say that the team who wins the majority of the physical battles, the team who wins those 50/50 balls and dishes out the most bruises to their opponent, are generally the winner of the match. The midfield are generally the players who are going to feed the ball to the Games teams strikers. In this case it's Emmanuel Dolo, Mitchell Barry and Jacob Grant. Hey, I like all three of these players. When these players decide to get engaged, they can be dynamite, they have talent , they have the ability to beat an opponent, and above all they know where the net is and have the ability to finish.

The Canada Games Team are currently in Corner Brook

I know before the season started I put my neck on the line by saying the Canada Games Team would finish with a 500 record. Well folks, I stick with that prediction. Last night ( Friday Night - July 30 ) the NL Canada Games Team defeated Corner Brook 3-1. The Games Team will again play Corner Brook on Saturday July 1st at 6 PM and on Sunday at 1PM.

I am also very proud that Ryan has signed on with the St. Lawrence Laurentians after the completion of the National Games competition in August.

Jake Warren: A weekend to remember !

After the completion of this past weekends Molson Challenge Cup action, Holy Cross moved ahead of the idle Mount Pearl team to move into the 4th and final play-off position. Holy Cross picked up two victories defeating both Corner Brook and CBS by identical scores of 3-0. What was so incredible here was the six goal performance by Holy Cross's Jake Warren. By any standards..... it is a weekend for him remember. Warren has been an all-star since he entered the league and he is currently on pace to be a strong candidate for NLSA Senior Player of the Decade, 2010 -2019. As of right now, he would receive my first place vote. Scoring back to back hat-tricks is an amazing feat. Taking a close look at the overall scoring and standings, the leagues goal-scoring is way down. I feel this is as a result of the parity in the league. Jake Warren went into the weekend with two goals and after his six goal weekend, he currently stands in 1st place in the goal-scoring dept.

In St. Lawrence, where you are only as good as your last game, the Laurentians were embarrassed right in front of their home fans. On Sunday the NLSA Under- 18 Provincial Canada Games team humiliated the Laurentians by defeating the 1st place Laurentians by a score of 1 -0. The game was scoreless until the 84 minute mark when Jacob Grant scored a beauty, defeating Laurentians goalie Patrick Slaney on the play. The NL Games team is comprised of a group of kids who are Under-18,youth by soccer standards. What I found rather startling in this contests were the number of no-shows for the Laurentians. The Laurentians must have been missing at least a half a dozen regulars. I'm realize some of the missing players had legitimate reason and over the course of a twenty -three game schedule, players will miss a number of games. I also realize there is a certain amount of honor and pride given to any player who dons the Laurentians Blue and if you make that commitment, one is expected to honor it. Meanwhile on Saturday, the Laurentians, despite being a little short-handed did what is expected of the 1st place Challenge Cup team in NLSA's Senior League, they defeated the Canada Games team by a score of 3-0.

The BPSA recently had a referees clinic with 14 new people joined on as new officials. These officials will be helping out at the BPSA Minor Provincial League as referees and assistant Referees. Some of them will even be on the line for Challenge Cup League Games. Corey Walsh who has returned home to St. Lawrence will be home from Alberta will be refereeing Challenge Cup League Games. Actually, Corey refereed this past weekend against St. Lawrence and I was rather impressed. He knows the game well and he takes no nonsense from the players. This is definitely a huge step to help develop officials on the Burin Peninsula.

Got to say,"I loved it the Mount Pearl / St. Lawrence series"

Hey, what a battle this past weekend. It was in St. Lawrence between the Laurentian's and Mount Pearl . It was sort of old time soccer, the teams battled hard and made the officials earn every cent they are paid. More importantly this past weekend referee Corey Walsh and his two young linesmen got it right, they allowed the teams to play the game. To often, I witness a referee not allowing any flow to the game. For most part we all know who the referees are, we don't need them, nor do we want them to be the center of attention in a game. They need to control the game and yes at times there will be a need to issue cautions to control the game. However, I also realize that there are times that verbal reprimands should be given to players before the referee goes deep into his pocket or on his jersey to retrieve a yellow card. I know there are other times a straight yellow can be warranted or for that matter a straight Red Card is deserved but there is no need for the officials to be card happy.

"Very enjoyable soccer"

Moving on from this early week rant, I must add, Mount Pearl put on a great show in St. Lawrence where the ghosts at the St. Lawrence Centennial field usually lead the home team to victory. It was very enjoyable soccer. On Saturday, Mount Pearl were persistent in their efforts and as a result they tenaciously earned a point in a 2-2 draw. Besides the goals scored by the Laurentians Sean Drew and Brent Hennebury, and Mount Pearl's Tyler Forsey and Scott Woodfine, I liked how Mount Pearl's veterans battle including Andrew Murphy, Kevin Oram, Taedy O'Rourke, Ryan Thistle and Mark Reddy wouldn't back down, they simply wouldn't go away. I also have a great amount of respect for the offensive abilities of Tyler Forsey, Scott Woodfine and Ronaldo Morris. Meanwhile, when it comes to the Laurentian players, you can be guaranteed where there's a little commotion happening, you can count on Laurentians captain Marc Pittman to be there. Now the Laurentian's have newcomer Marc Brefo who hails from Ghana. Brefo is dynamic, he is another player who draws players and officials to his area of play. I would have to say he is the most physical player in the league but he also has talent. I totally admire his skill set and physical strength. He is Ghanaian version of former St. Lawrence Laurentian star player Alec Turpin. Now proceeding on to Sunday when the Laurentians defeated and shutout Mount Pearl 3-0. Folks, don't let the score fool you. Mount Pearl and St. Lawrence again clashed and at times both teams viciously fought for supremacy. There's no doubt the Laurentians had the better quality scoring chances throughout the entire contest but two of the Laurentian goals, Sean Drews and Devon Ryans markers were scored late in the dying minutes. The other Laurentian goal was scored by Brent Hennebury at the six minute mark. However throughout the contest, Mount Pearl had their chances too, but they couldn't capitalize. During this contest, referee Corey Walsh handed out five yellows, three going to St. Lawrence and two to Mount Pearl. These sort of contests are what the fans want, they want action, they want teams to illustrate heart and above all they want quality soccer, that's what they saw in both matches between Mount Pearl and St. Lawrence this past weekend.

I would have to say the biggest surprise this season is the fact that Holy Cross has faltered so much in the start to the 2017 season. On Saturday at KGV , the Feildians shout-out Cross 1-0.

Simon Pope scored the lone goal for the Feildians. The loss for Holy Cross puts them into 5th place with a 1win -3ties - 3 loss record. I can't say anyone would have predicted such a horrendous start for Holy Cross who have virtually owned the regular Challenge Cup season for the past eight years. CBS Strikers, playing out of Topsail, are off to their best start in years. This past weekend CBS collected four points defeating Corner Brook 3-0 on Saturday, with league leading goalscorer Erick Mathiasen, scoring a pair for CBS. On Sunday the teams played to a scoreless draw. CBS's four point weekend currently puts them into 3rd place, with 14 points, behind the 2nd place Feildians who has 15 points, while the 1st place Laurentians, have 22 points.

career in England he opted to look elsewhere to play football. The University
of New Brunswick was my chosen destination where I would go in the play five
years for the varsity reds under head coach Miles Pinsent. I enjoyed lots of
success at UNB; winning three consecutive AUS titles, a national bronze medal .
Mark captained the UNB side to the national
final in 2015, where they unfortunately lost.<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , "serif"; font-size: 12.0pt;"> Lawton moved

year and then he decided he wanted to play Challenge Cup soccer so he
knew he must find a new team. As captain
of UNB I knew the majority of players around Atlantic Canada. Jordi Slaney was
my link to St. Lawrence, and he introduced me to John Douglas who really took
me under his wing when I knew very few people. I am thoroughly enjoying my time
with St. Lawrence, however, I am struggling to adapt to football as the 'new kid
on the block' when it comes to officials. Off the pitch I am a realtor for Oceans Edge
by Exit. I have links to the company in Fredericton and I'm hoping to build a
good foundation in St. John's too.

With six points on the table this weekend for Holy Cross , Mount Pearl , Feildians and St. Lawrence a lot was at stake for all four clubs. When the final tally was done Holy Cross had the greatest tally this past weekend achieving four out of a possible six points. Holy Cross on Saturday battled to get only their third point of the season tying Mount Peral 1-1. All-star Jake Warren scored his first of the season and it was Scotty Woodfine beating Thomas Pieroway to allow Mount Pearl to clinch a tie. This tie by Holy Cross was followed up with their best game of the season when the Crusaders blanked the 1st place St. Lawrence Laurentians on Sunday by a 2-0 score. Against St. Lawrence, Tyler Kirby may have not hit the scoreboard on Sunday but it was his running ability combined with his passing skills which set up goals from Holy Cross's, Mike Dunn and Jake Warren thus allowing Holy Cross to get their much needed first win of the season. On Sunday, the Laurentians started well but lacked discipline throughout the contest. As a result of their undisciplined play before the contest concluded, they were playing two men down as a result of two red cards issued to their players. St. Lawrence on the other hand on Saturday were were in excellent form. They defeated Feildians 3-0 in a very convincing form with goals coming off the boot of Laurentians Stefan Slaney, Brent Hennebury and Jordan Caines. John Douglas recorded the Laurentian shut-out. Meanwhile Mount Pearl managed to get two points over the weekend with their 1-1 tie against Holy Cross and with their scoreless tie against Feildians on Sunday. Meanwhile, Feildians who had gone into the weekend with an undefeated record, failed to score a goal in their two contests but did manage to pick up one point in their scoreless tie on Sunday in Mount Pearl.

Here we are after nearly a month of soccer and again I'm seeing Tyler Forsey battling it out with Aaron Buckingham for the Wils Molloy "Golden Boot Award". I know it;s only early but I do realize, it's been nearly a decade now since Forsey first entered the NLSA Molson Challenge Cup League and it's a fact that where ever Tyler Forsey has played goals seem to follow him around . Somehow, I don't think this is coincidental, personally, I feel he is as good of a goalscorer as there is in the country at the Challenge Cup level. He has dazzling speed with a shot that can be struck with either foot. In fact on a given day he can be a goalie's worse nightmare. While the Feildians Buckingham tends to be more of a soldier, a lanky player who is very strong with a rather big frame, who shields the ball well and when given a scoring opportunity can find the back of the net.

Laurentians thump Holy Cross 4-0

I've been around the sport of soccer a long time and there is no doubt the greatest rivalry in the history of the sport is the rivalry between the St. Lawrence Laurentians and the Holy Cross Crusaders. Both teams have dominated provincially. The Laurentians have won 25 Challenge Cup Championships out of a possible 50. Holy Cross have captured 17 Provincial Challenge Cup titles. In the Laurentians 25 appearances at the Nationals, the Laurentians have won 3 Silver & 2 Bronze. In Holy Cross's National appearances, the red and gold have captured one each of Gold, Silver and Bronze. It's only fair to say Holy Cross have dominated provincially the past eight years under the direction of Head Coach Jake Stanford , winning six Provincial Titles.

Holy Cross Currently Struggling

While I wouldn't entirely write off Holy Cross in 2017 , to say that they are struggling thus far is an understatement. So far this season, Cross are winless after three contests 0W - 1T - 2L. This is a record that this club is not exactly accustomed to plus Holy Cross's losing their opening game in 2017 to CBS shocked the soccer fraternity. I sort of feel for Holy Cross's new coach Jeremy Babstock. On the surface it somewhat appears as if several of Cross's former players have jumped ship. Others are asking, did Holy Cross's loss in the 2016 playoffs in St. Lawrence on Labour Day weekend destroy this provincial powerhouse? Holy Cross had gone to St. Lawrence needing only one win to advance to the 2016 National Championships which were being hosted in St. John's. While in the mining town the near impossible happened. Holy Cross loss their opening match to Mount Pearl in the 1 vs 2 contest. This loss was followed by a dramatic second loss in the semi-finals, this time to the Laurentians , who went on to win the Challenge Cup. Furthermore, adding insult to injury, because Holy Cross had accumulated two losses, this knocked them out of the 2016 Nationals.

Laurentians dominated

On Sunday, what was built to be another provincial soccer thriller, became anti-climatic before the game ended. The new look Holy Cross team were dominated by the Laurentians from the opening whistle. The Laurentians opened with two first half goals by Stefan Slaney and Adam Kelly and looked far superior to their arch-rivals . Holy Cross's frustration became very apparent before the first half ended, with Chris Pope and Tyler Kirby getting ejected . The Laurentians captain, Marc Pittman was also sent off for an early shower. In the second half with the Laurentians playing 10 against nine, Laurentians scored another brace. This time it was Sean Drew and Jordi Slaney denting the twine. The Laurentians new 2017 additions, who consisted of George Lawton, Mack Brefo and Devon Ryan all performed admirable. Patrick Slaney made an outstanding save on Sean Henderson to record the Laurtentian's shut-out.

My Sincere Condolences

On behalf of the entire soccer fraternity in Newfoundland and Labrador, I would like to offer my sincere condolences to the family and friends of Max Kettle. Maybe the best know Kettle in soccer is Max's younger brother Dion but I can attest that Max Kettle was a great player too. The problem was in the 60's & 70"s there were just so many great players in St. Lawrence. Max played when the game when it was played with a 5 -3-2 format. Max played outside left, had great speed and booming left foot shot. He played most of his career with the 2nd Division Laurentians but was a regular call-up to the 1st Division Laurentian's.

Sharing With You .... One Of My Secrets !

In the 70's when I was fairly young.. 17... 18, I was called up to the 2nd Division Laurentian's to play a BPSA 2nd Division g=Game in Fortune. In those days you would drive, in your own vehicle, and the players would share the cost between them. On this given day, I went to Fortune with Jackie Walsh, Max Kettle and Mookie Turpin Sr. It was in this particular game that a linesman chased me all over the field because I told him to go back to the Legion and call it an evening..... he then chased me around the field, trying to catch me, if he had caught me I'm sure he would have laid a solid pounding on me. In this case, the official got thrown out of the game for his actions.... Lol ! After the game, the team headed for the Legion to have a few cold ones and on this particular night we had a few more & a few more cold ones. Once we left the Legion it didn't stop there, we stopped at a local store and picked up a few more. Then, on the way back from Fortune this is where it all happened? Getting half ways going the Marystown route... we were being followed by the RCMP and eventually got hauled over to check us out. There our driver took off into the woods ..... he presumably got scared ... LOL ! The other three players stayed in the car and when questioned by the police, "Told the cops we were hitch-hiking and had gotten picked up and coincidentally the players told the police they didn't know who the driver was. The police never did find the driver while one player stayed behind looking for the driver and the others were brought to Marystown to find a way home.

Through thick or thin - rain or snow - the Western Cup was a go. This was the case again in Corner Brook in 2017 despite some adverse weather conditions. This invitational tournament is guided by the Western Region - Corner Brook Senior Men's League and I must add they are doing it right .... this tournament continues to flourish and grow annually. No, it may not be your Challenge Cup but don't tell that to the competing clubs. Grand Bank has entered this tournament for a number of years and there's no doubt in my mind their goal is to win. This year the Gee Bees went undefeated, defeating the Monarchs 4-1 in the championship contest. In the semi-final they defeated Gander by a 7 -0 score. In round robin play Grand Bank defeated the Corner Brook Masters by a 5-0 score and the Corner Brook Monarchs by a 4-1 score.

St. Lawrence Laurentians have won 25 Championships

in the 50 year history of NLSA Challenge Cup

==========

Laurentians again are the favorite in 2017

If early goings of the 2017 season are any indication of what 2017 Molson Challenge Cup season are all about, I predict the St. Lawrence Laurentian's are the team to beat this season. I realize they lost their opening game to Mount Pearl by a 1-0 score but sometimes upsets occur where a team may have a dominating performance and still lose the contest. If early goings are a further indication, it appears Holy Cross maybe still a good team but their loss of coach Jake Stanford and some key players will definitely stop their dominance in league play.

Laurentian - Coaching Staff

St. Lawrence are currently led by the best coaching staff in the league with Derek Strang and Paul Slaney at the helm. Derek at times may be very shrewd coach, while Paul only appears to be a mellow dude, he too can add an arm of shrewdness. However or whatever, put both of these different personalities together and the Laurentians have proven winners behind their bench.

Laurentians key players

The Laurentians are strong down the middle. They have John Douglas , the best goalie in the league . They have captain Marc Pittman, top defender in the league and Jordi Slaney, who in my estimate is the best midfielder in the Challenge Cup League. Besides this, the Laurentian have Stefan Slaney who can be their "ACE IN THE HOLE" if he is physically fit. Personally, I like Sean Drew. I feel he is the most under-rated player in the league. The Laurentians are very keen in their development process, they continue to develop players such as Adam Kelly , Shane Perrott , Mike Gregory, Patrick Slaney Jordan Caines, Daniel Carew, Parker Doyle and Brent Hennebury and make them appreciate every minute of playing time they get.

2017 - Loses vs Additions

This year the Laurentians may have lost the regular services of future HOF'er Clinton Edwards and journeyman Darren Pike but they have added some quality players; George Lawton - Former UNB Captain, Mark Breto - Ghana, and Devon Ryan - former CBS Strikers player . It's really a little early yet for me to give a good assessment of these players who have the honor of wearing one of the most respected amateur soccer jersey in all of Canada. However, I did like like my first look at George Lawton but only time will tell. These new players will really need to go to St. Lawrence and play on St. Lawrence Day to get a real feel for the Laurentian tradition and what it means to play for this prestigious club. I also understand that Corey Mullett - former Holy Cross player is again back wearing the blue and white this year. Corey can add some debt to the 2017 Laurentians team.

Let's Meet Gary Forsyth

Gary Forsyth has been around the block a little to say the least. This is Gary's second stint at being the Head Coach of the CBS Strikers. He definitely brings a lot of enthusiasm to the job and at times may even a little to much - lol !. After bringing the CBS team back into the fold in 2015 after the club was absent from Challenge Cup in 2014 the team is off to a tremendous start in 2017. Last year CBS only managed two draws on the year. This year CBS has 2 wins and 1 tie after three matches. Gary is convinced his team are ready to compete for a play-off position in 2017. He said we are ready to roll some heads and make a little noise this year. Hopefully, what Forsyt said comes true because the league will only get better with teams competing for the final four.

Season Outlook
by
Gord Dunphy

1. CBS will be a different team in 2017 They are very much improved, should compete for 4th.

2. Holy Cross have lost some key players and as a result they will struggle to maintain regular season supremacy.

3. St. Lawrence should finish 1st or 2nd but they lack scoring punch.

4. Feildians are a team who could surprise this year but if they want
to gain respect, they must learn to show up on Labour Day Weekend.

5. Mount Pearl will fight for the 1 v 2 position but if I were a betting
man , I would give them a 3rd place finish. Offensively and defensive,
I like their team, but they need to be more gritty in the middle.

6. Corner Brook loss two games at homes against Feildians in the
opening weekend, this tells me that we are looking at 5 - 6 place
finish.

7. Canada Games . I will make a bold prediction here and
say out of their 18 game exhibition schedule, they will play
.500 ball.

Good luck to all!
