Soccer Tidbits

St. Lawrence Laurentians : The Laurentians may have had to overcome some adversity in 2011 when they had to deal with the loss of some of their key players but in 2012 things look a little different. With the return of all-stars Rudy Norman, John Douglas and Jon Grant the Laurentians should be able to push other contenders when the silverware is on display come Labour Day Weekend. The addition of Tyler Forsey in mid -July should help out the team immensely .

Holy Cross: New additions Steve DeLong, Pat Reddick, and Brandon Noseworthy add even greater strength to a star studded team. This club can once again be called “ the Big Red Machine” and they will be very hard to beat. However, the beauty of soccer is sometimes all it takes is one game.

Mount Pearl: It has to be very hard for coach, Walt Mavin this season. At the start of the season Mount Pearl lost Rudy Norman, Jon Grant, Tyler Forsey, and Kevin Oram from last years squad. To add insult to injury, Mount Pearl’s All -Star Jon Kelly fractured his foot in just the second game of the season.

Feildians : Youth, fitness, and believing in themselves is the key to the success of this team. The addition of Blaise Peters certainly strengthens the offence of the Feildians.

CBS: Coaches Gary Forsyt and Damien Masters believe in themselves and have done a remarkable job in recruiting and assembling a team. Combined with the organization skills of the senior committee responsible for the CBS Challenge Cup team, Gerard Kenny, Calvin Randell, and Bruce Miller and we now have another club that is a legitimate contender.

Future Challenge Cup Stars: The best young soccer stars who I feel have great potential for the future are Jordi Slaney - St. Lawrence, Ryan Thistle – Mount Pearl, and Thomas Pieroway - CBS. All three of these players are minor age ( U-18 )and are currently seeing action with their parent clubs.

A Richard Kelly Comeback: I love to see Richard make a comeback but only if he truly has the time to commit. For me to see Richard in uniform and be only a shadow of the player he was when he was on top of his game would be a shame. There is no doubt in my mind that Richard was one of the best players that I’ve ever seen and that’s the way I like to remember him.

Top Challenge Cup Goalie : Hands down my number one is John Douglas. Douglas is capable of winning a game by himself.

Sport Newfoundland and Labrador: It’s great to see that George “Bo” Collier has been inducted into the Sport NL Hall of Fame. Personally, I feel “Bo” was one of the greatest soccer players to ever play soccer in Newfoundland and he is by far the best ever Fortune Apollo. Congratulations Bo !

Canadian Soccer Association Soccer Hall of Fame: It’s also nice to see Angus Barrett has been inducted in to the Canadian Soccer Hall of Fame where the most elite soccer personalities in the country are showcased. The thing I like about Angus is he is every bit as much as a gentleman as he is great soccer person . Congratulations Angus !

Tyler Forsey Update

 Tyler Forsey

Tyler Forsey - Atlantic SC
Atlantic SC is a brand new independent soccer club formed in 2011 and based in Southern New Brunswick, working closely with existing national and international clubs and coaches, alwaylooking for the most talented players to give them the opportunity to reach their goals.

Atlantic SC uses the world renowned Dutch football philosophy of coaching, which is based on developing the player’s technical ball control and tactical knowledge.
Atlantic SCalso follow the Canadian Soccer Associations Long Term Player Development program; they believe that these systems together will create the ideal environment for players who want to take soccer to a professional level. Players will be constantly challenged to achieve individual and team goals, with the intention of developing into becoming top class soccer players.
U20 / USL SUPER 20 LEAGUE
In 2012 Atlantic SC currently has a  U-20 men’s team playing in the New England division of the  Super 20 USL League . The USL is the largest organization of elite-level soccer leagues in North America.
Playing in the USL has introduces a high quality league to the Maritimes. Their future goal is to provide a home base for the club, eventually having their own professional facilities so that we can provide year round training, which is an absolute must to compete at this level.

Holy Cross blanks Feildians while recording their 5th consective shut-out

Jon Hawco scoring on a PK against Feildians

Holy Cross: 5 vs Feildians:0

It was all Holy Cross as Holy Cross dominated the Feildians from the opening whistle to the 90th minute mark. League leading goal-scorer Steve Delong added a couple of goals, putting him at eight on the season. Jon Hawco put one in the back of the net on a PK. While former Halifax native Pat Reddick and defender Jeff Slaney both dented the twine once. Slaney also missed on a PK. Young Brandon Noseworthy, Holy Cross first year goalkeeper, who left the Mount Pearl organization to be Cross's #1 keeper must feel like he has died and went to heaven after having recorded his fifth consective shut-out in just five games.

Greene is presently a member of the Tokyo Panthers Football Club that recently won the  Tokyo Metro League Division One Championship. The Laurentians play CBS in their home opener this week-end

The blue boys are back in town !

L-R : Richard Kelly, Rudy Norman, John Douglas & Clinton Edwards

Home Opener !
St. Lawrence will play their home-opener against the CBS representatives this coming week-end. St. Lawrence will be led by the return of Richard Kelly, Rudy Norman , Jon Grant and John Douglas . The Laurentians  had earlier opened the 2012 season, with a visit to the Avalon Peninsula, recording a 2-1 loss to Feildians and a 1-1 tie to Mount Pearl. Although, I feel the Laurentians will be a much stronger squad this season but it may take some time for the team to gel. The team is currently working on a new system of play that may take some time before the teams chemistry is at a comfortable level.
However, the CBS representatives - CB Auto Strikers FC team have the makings of being the,  "Most Improved Team" this season. Coach, Gary Forsyt has done a superb job with this young team in just three short season. I like his technical approach and the emphasis he has placed on physical fitness. His assistant, Damien Masteron has been a very good compliment since signing on with the FC Team . On the field CBS  are led by their all-star keeper, Chris Hayes. While Ryan Sheppard, Trevory Ivany and Allan Dalton are solid players. Up front Chris White and Ayuba Kamara provide adequate offense. Could be an interesting week-end.
